Abby woke sometime after midnight.

She didn't know what had woken her.

At first she thought it was the radiator.

Then she heard voices.

She sat up.

The room was dark except for the thin line of streetlight beneath the curtains.

She held her breath.

Voices.

Downstairs.

The woman.

And the man.

They were arguing.

Abby slid out of bed.

She didn't turn on the light.

She crossed the room quietly and put her ear against the door.

The voices were faint.

She couldn't make out the words.

Then the man's voice rose.

"You said they wouldn't find it."

Abby froze.

The woman answered, lower.

"I said they wouldn't find it that quickly."

"That's not what you said."

"They weren't supposed to have the car."

A pause.

"They have the car."

"I know."

"And the photographs."

Silence.

Abby's heart began to pound.

Photographs.

She pressed closer to the door.

The man spoke again.

"They've got more than the car."

The woman said something Abby couldn't hear.

"No."

The man's voice was sharper.

"No, don't do that. Don't tell me this is still under control."

Abby closed her eyes.

She recognized the tone.

It was the same voice she'd heard before.

The man was scared.

The woman said something.

The man laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"You think this is about money?"

Abby opened her eyes.

Money.

She'd wondered about that.

Maybe that was why they'd taken her.

Maybe Dad was supposed to pay them.

But the woman had never asked for money.

The man continued.

"If it was about money, this would have been over hours ago."

Abby's stomach tightened.

The woman answered.

"I know what we're doing."

"Do you?"
