Brendon lowered the phone.
For a moment, he just stared at the screen.
His mother's last words were still in his head.
She's our girl too.
He swallowed hard and slipped the phone into his pocket.
Collins was standing near the hotel door, listening to an officer who had just entered the room.
The officer finished speaking.
Collins's expression changed.
Brendon noticed immediately.
"What?"
Collins looked at him.
"Someone called the incident line."
Brendon's heart stopped.
"About Abby?"
"We don't know yet."
"Then what did they call about?"
"An unusual light."
Brendon stared at him.
The officer opened his notebook.
"A woman living on a residential street says she saw a light repeatedly switching on and off from an upstairs window last night. It would flip on and off three times, then a pause, then start again."
Brendon felt something inside him lurch.
"Three times?"
The officer looked at his notes.
"Repeatedly."
"Three flashes?"
"I don't know."
Brendon looked at Collins.
"A signal."
Collins's jaw tightened.
"Maybe."
"No."
Brendon was already moving.
"Where?"
Collins held up a hand.
"Brendon."
"Where?"
The officer gave him the address.
Brendon memorized it immediately.
"How far?"
"About twenty minutes."
"Let's go."
Collins didn't move.
Brendon stared at him.
"What?"
"We're not going."
Brendon blinked.
"What do you mean, we're not going?"
"We're going to verify the information first."
"You just said someone may have seen a child."
"I said someone saw a light and possibly a child."
"That's enough."
"No."
Brendon's voice rose.
"If there is even a chance—"
"I know."
"Then why are we standing here?"
"Because at seven-thirty this morning, we're supposed to receive an address."
