By the time evening came, Abby knew the room well enough to hate it.
She knew the floor creaked beside the bed.
She knew the radiator made a clicking sound every few minutes.
She knew the pipes in the wall groaned when someone downstairs turned on a tap.
She knew the window was painted shut.
She had tried it four times.
The first time, she'd been hopeful.
The second time, she'd been angry.
The third time, she'd used both hands.
The fourth time, she'd simply rested her forehead against the glass afterward and stared at the street below.
It wasn't going to open.
Not without something to break the paint.
And she didn't have anything to break it with.
The door was locked.
The window was locked.
The wardrobe was empty except for clothes.
The dresser drawers contained nothing useful.
The lamp beside the bed had a short cord that disappeared behind the furniture, and the ceiling light was set into a shallow fixture high above her head.
There was nothing.
Nothing except the light switch.
Abby looked at it.
She had noticed it earlier.
She just hadn't thought about it.
She crossed the room.
The switch was beside the door.
She pressed it.
The ceiling light went out.
The room changed instantly.
The walls disappeared into shadow.
The only light came from the narrow gap she'd left in the curtains.
Abby stood still.
She could see the reflection of the street in the window.
A car passed.
Its headlights swept across the ceiling.
For a moment, the entire room lit up.
Then darkness again.
Abby looked at the switch.
She pressed it.
Light.
She pressed it again.
Darkness.
She frowned.
It was such a small thing.
So ordinary.
She turned it on again.
Nothing happened.
Of course nothing happened.
The world outside didn't stop.
Cars continued down the road.
Someone laughed.
A dog barked.
A door slammed somewhere across the street.
Abby looked at the switch again.
