Kate's POV
April 29, 2023
On speaking terms, Nick and Daniel were back to being best friends. Their argument was petty, and both boys knew that. As for the lovely couple, Tori and Nick finally talked things out and decided to remain as friends.
Right now, I'm over at Tori's house watching The Longest Ride. She pauses the movie suddenly and looks over at me.
"I can't believe Daniel finally asked you out," she awes for the hundredth time today. "I didn't think he'd be able to."
"What do you mean?" I question.
Tori gives me a confused look and then smirks. "You're so oblivious. Daniel has been in love with you even before you were together."
Was I really that clueless? We turn our attention back to the movie in front of us.
When I need motivation
My one solution is my queen
Cause she stays strong
Yeah, yeah
She is always in my corner
Right there when I want her
All these other girls are tempting
But I'm empty when you're gone
And they say-"Hello?" I answer my phone.
"Kate, it's me," a shaky voice says from the other line.
My heart beat speeds up. "Daniel, what's wrong?"
"My brother called," he replies.
Before I can reply, my mind flashes back to the memory that was locked up till now- the day Daniel found out about Nate and Olivia.
He begins pacing around the room, stopping every now and then to relax. "It hurts enough finding out that you've been cheating on me, but it hurts even more knowing that it was with Nate."
Nate begins to say something, but Daniel cuts him off. "And you, my brother. I-I have no words. We're already dealing with mom's cancer battle & then you go ahead and do this."
Daniel points to Nick and I. "They're my true friends." He walks over to us, ready to leave, and stops. "And if it isn't clear enough, I'm done . . . with the both of you."
My attention is directed back to my nervous boyfriend on the phone. "What did he say?"
I hear Daniel sigh in frustration. "My mom passed away. She lost the fight, Kate. Cancer won."
My heart drops as my eyes fill with tears. "I'm on my way right now," I tell him, standing up and grabbing my keys.
"You're leaving?" Tori asks.
"Daniel needs me." I quickly fill her in on what happened, and her facial expression is full of nothing but sympathy.
She stands up and holds my hand. "I'm coming too."
.
"I'm so sorry," I cry into Daniel's shoulder once we reach the waiting room. He doesn't say anything but replies with a gentle kiss to my forehead.
We sit down in two of the chairs, and that's when I finally notice Nick's arrival. Tori and him exchange hugs, as she is seated next to him. I can't help but wonder if this is awkward for them.
"Is Nate here?" I ask Nick, not wanting to upset Daniel.
He nods his head. "Yeah. He just left to get a bottle of water from one of the machines." He motions for me to speak with him outside of the room, and I quickly get up to follow him.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
Nick looks behind him, and speaking in a hushed tone, says, "Nate talked to me before you guys came. He said that he wants to make up with Daniel, being that it's what their mom would've wanted."
"Oh . . . "
Nicks head drops as he looks down at the floor. "But the thing is, Nate still hasn't broken up with Olivia."
My eyes widen, anger passing through me. "Tell him it's either Daniel or her."
"I tried," Nick says, "but she won."
Disappointed, the two of us walk back to where Daniel and Tori are seated. Family should always come first.
"Daniel," I say. "Look at me. Please." He turns his head slightly, and I see that he's been crying. "Your mom was a great person. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met, and you should be proud to say that this woman was your mom."
Daniel looks over at me, smiling weakly. "Have you noticed something though? It's all in the past tense. My mom was this, my mom was that, but what is she now?"
"Your angel."
.
Hey guys! We're nearing the end of this story; I want to cry. Stay tuned for more surprises that I'm sure you won't want to miss ;))
Hint: Two more books for this series are in the making and . . .
THAT IS ALL I CAN TELL YOU!
Till next time, jackgeeee xo.
