Peeta POV:

Haymitch and I both decided that we would check on Katniss today, after leaving her alone for a week. Melanie wasn't happy when I told her.

"Let that b**ch die!" She yelled at me. I ran out of the house to get Haymitch after that. We knocked on the door, but she didn't answer.

"Open up!" Haymitch yells.

"Why should I?" Kantiss snaps back, from inside the house.

"Because we need to talk to you." It was a mistake telling her that 'we' need to talk to her.

"Who's we?" She yells. "If Peeta's there, I'm definitely not going to open the door!"

"We'll you're going to have to deal." He yells, kicking the door open. We both gasp when we see her frail, thin body. She's sitting in a puddle of her own blood. Most of it is coming from her arms, but I can see some dripping down from the cuts on her thighs.

"You shouldn't help me." She whimpers, backing away from us. "I'm beyond any help you can get.

"But we care about you." I say, without thinking. She glares at me, and grabs the razor blade off the table.

"Why care about when I'm just going to kill myself?" She asks, tracing the edge of the blade with her index finger. "Why don't I just do it now?" She says, holding the blade up to her throat. "No one would care. No one else loves me." A tear escaped her eye as she pushes the blade into her flesh.

Haymitch and I try to inch closer, but this makes her push the blade farther into her throat.

"Don't." I whisper. I do care about her. I don't know what I would do if she were to die.

"Why would you care?" She snaps, removing the blade from her neck. She runs her finger along the cut of her neck. With the blood she had on her finger, she wrote onto the floor next to her "YOU SAID ALWAYS"

That's when she raises the blade up to her neck, and slits her throat.

I scream and we both run over to her. Haymitch rips off the sleeve of his long-sleeved shirt and covers the cut around her neck.

"We have to get her to the hospital." Haymitch yells at me. I heave her over my shoulder and rush to Haymitch's car. I jump into the seat with a dying Katniss in my arms, and Haymitch starts to drive. He's going at least 30mph over the speed limit, but I'm too stunned to care.

When we get to the hospital, the doctors rip Katniss out of my arms, and bring her into the ER.

A doctor approaches us and asks "Are you friends or family of Katniss Everdeen."

"She doesn't have any family, but she's been telling me that I'm her family now." Haymitch says. "That has to count as family. Right?" He asks, gasping for air.

"Then who's he?" The doctor asks, gesturing towards me.

"Just a friend." Haymitch says, glaring at me. "Just let us know what happened." Haymitch yells.

The doctor turns red in the face and calmly says "Just calm down sir."

"Calm down?" Haymitch asks. "I think of her, as my own child. I don't know what I would do with out her." He yells. The doctor whispers something in Haymitch's ear, after finally getting him to clam down, and he follows the doctor into the other room.

He comes out, trying not to let any tears spill. She's probably dead. I think. Haymitch has never cried. At least not in front of anyone.

"What happened?" I demand. Haymitch just glares at me. His glare is telling me 'it's all your fault'. And he's right. I had to leave Katniss's side when she was staying at the hospital in the Capitol. I had to find someone else that I had feelings for.
