Chapter 17 (Silver POV)
Silver had never been happier. It was two weeks until Christmas and she was head-over-heels in love with Maika. He had been amazing a week ago with Beth and Xav. Damon had never gone with her, or even acknowledged that they existed. Even though they’d only been together for a little over a month, she felt like she really knew Maika, unlike a lot of the other guys she’d dated. It was a cold December Sunday when Silver and Damien were walking on the quad, talking.
“So how’s your guy?” Damien asked.
“Oh, he’s amazing as always. It’s so nice to be in a relationship without so much fighting. With Maika, everything is always good,” Silver said.
“Yo Silver! Sack!” Drake called from across the quad.
“Sorry, can’t turn down a game…” she said apologetically. Damien gave her a look of understanding, then she walked over to Drake and his friend, Joey.
“Hey guys, you ready to lose?” she teased, pulling out her beat up hacky-sack.
“Oh is that a challenge?” Joey asked, smiling.
“You bet,” Silver kicked it to Joey. He kicked it twice then passed it to Drake who kicked it from left foot, to right foot, back to left and then to Silver. She kicked it twice, then launched it in the air, twirled around, and kicked it to Joey. He kicked it high, then bounced it off his head to Drake. Drake caught it and attempted to do the trick Silver had done on the first day of school, but the sack hit him in the face and fell to the ground. Both Silver and Joey burst out laughing.
“Shut up” Drake grumbled, but they kept laughing.
“Silver, where’d you learn those sweet moves?” Joey asked once they’d regained their composer.
“Oh, Maika helps me out. He helps me come up with some of the tricks, like the twirl one was his idea,” Silver said. She couldn’t count how many times he’d said, ‘Come on Gold, you can do it’ and she’d growled ‘Shut up Princess’. Suddenly she saw Maika walking quickly across the quad.
“So, is he any good?” Drake asked, recovering from his bruised ego.
“Who Maika? No he’s awful, but I’m working on it.” She smiled and watched Maika look around then slip into the kitchen.
‘What’s he doing in there?’ she thought.
“Hey guys, I’ve gotta go, I’ll see you later.” She told Drake and Joey. She set off towards the kitchen. Silver saw Damien talking to some guy, but she was more interested in what Maika was doing in the kitchen.
It didn’t take long and she was gripping the door handle. Silver swung open the door revealing Maika, hunched over a pile of raw meat.
“Maika?” she asked, maybe it was a trick of the eyes. All the muscles of his body seemed to lock up, as he turned slowly.
Silver gasped in fright. Maika’s eyes were dilated and his canines were sharpened. He had blood along the edges of his lips and a chunk of raw meat in his mouth. His face showed a kind of animalistic hunger, and it was frightening. Then a look of sadness gathered in his eyes.
“Silver, I never wanted you to see me like this…” his voice came in a half-growl and he stepped towards her.
“Don’t touch me!” she cried, shaking, then turned and bolted. She wanted to be as far away from Maika, or whatever the hell he was. Silver ran up to her room and locked herself in, scared to death.
‘What the hell was he? What the hell was going on?’ she wondered as she curled herself into a ball on her bed.
(Maika POV)
“Maika?” her voice asked. Damn! Of all people to find him feeding, it had to be Silver.
The wolf was strong today, because if the full moon tonight. He was trying to do a project but all he could concentrate on was the wolf’s craving for meat. He thought it’d be quick, harmless, but it was just his luck.
As soon as he’d heard her voice, all his muscles went into lock-down. Maika turned slowly. He saw the fear spread across his face. It killed him inside, having caused her this fear.
“Silver, I never wanted you to see me like this…” he said. His voice came out in an ugly half-growl, the wolf’s side leaking through.
Maika unthinkingly stepped forward to comfort her, only to have her scream “Don’t touch me” and run from him. Maika stood there alone, numb, in the kitchen. She should hate him, he was a monster. A god damn monster that didn’t belong in society. He sighed. Any craving he may have had for meat was gone now. It’d left with the person he cared most about, Silver. He had to explain, but she probably wouldn’t open the door for him.
‘Damien! He’s got a key’ Maika thought. He checked in a mirror, everything was back to normal. he saw Damien out on the quad. Maika sprinted over to him.
“Damien! Thank god, I locked myself out of the room, can I borrow your keys?” he lied.
“Yea here” Damien handed him the keys without question, then went back to talking to some guy.
“Thanks” Maika smiled and took off towards the girls’ dorm. When he reached he put the key in, not even bothering to knock.
‘Just last night I kissed her goodnight here.’ He thought sadly. Maika pushed open the door, ready for whatever happened next.
