Chapter 18 (Silver POV)
Silver heard the door open.
“Hey I know I’ve got no right to be here but I figured you had a right to know” Maika said, looking guiltily at her. He stepped inside and closed the door. Silver scooted back, still frightened by him. She could see the hurt on his face as he stayed by the door.
“Well,” Silver’s voice quavered from fear “what are you?”
“I’m a werewolf” Maika said, then paused waiting for something to happen. When nothing did, he continued.
“I’m one by lineage. Every guy in my family is stuck with the curse. Luckily moonstone counteracts the curse” Maika pulled out his moonstone necklace, then went on with his story.
“With enough moonstone in my system I won’t make the change, but that doesn’t mean the wolf isn’t there. That’s what you saw today, the wolf’s needs becoming too great.” Silver shivered.
“If you want I’ll tell you why I really haven’t had too many friends since I changed” he said cautiously.
Silver nodded, she wanted to know.
“Well remember that dream I told you about, that rist night? Well it actually goes like this. Me, Granden, and Chloe go into the woods. They go make out. I walk back and some moonlight hits me. I can feel and see the change happen. Then I’m the wolf. The first time I changed, it was impossible to control it. It smelled meat, human meat, Granden and Chloe.”
Silver gasped slightly.
“To make a long story short I killed them, I killed my best friend. I haven’t even been to his grave because I feel so guilty, I can’t stand it. Every day I have to deal with the pain of having killed Granden on my shoulders. Every day. He was my best friend and it’s my fault he’ll never go to college, never graduate high school, never get his driver’s license, it’s all my fault. My fault.” Maika wiped a tear from his face.
“Please Silver, I understand if you don’t want to be with me anymore, just never tell anyone.” He begged.
Silver stayed silent for a minute or two. She could see the tension in Maika’s features.
“Maika, I’ll keep your secret, but I can’t be with you for now” she said weakly.
(Maika POV)
Maika felt like someone tore his heart right out of his chest and ripped it to shreds.
“I understand, I wouldn’t want to date a murderer either.” Maika said harshly, opening the door.
“Maika…” she started but he slammed the door.
He didn’t listen, he couldn’t. he couldn’t even walk straight as he stumbled back to his room.
Maika looked around the room he shared with Damien. Everything reminded him of Silver, the pictures on the walls, the funny painting of jello she made him, the background of his phone, and even her hair tie, which had never left his wrist since she’d left it.
He flipped through the pictures on his phone. Over half of them were of her. The one that was his background was her kissing his cheek happily. Maika started to delete it, but couldn’t. Loving someone just couldn’t be turned off with a switch. He wished it could, it would make this a whole lot easier.
Damien entered the room. He looked at Maika, then at his phone, and remained silent. Usually Damien would freak out of he was frowning.
Maika needed a distraction fast. He was emotionally unstable, meaning it was easier for the wolf to take over. He reached for his laptop and flicked it on.
‘Of fucking course’ he thought. The background was a picture of him with a painted-on mustache and Silver holding a brush menacingly, and smiling. God he was stupid to think that she’d accept the wolf, that anyone would accept it. Though as much as he tried, he couldn’t make that night he’d opened up to her a mistake.
(Silver POV)
Silver watched Maika leave. It stung. He hadn’t even listened to her. He’d slammed the door in her face. She still loved him, just, she was so afraid of what she didn’t know.
“Did I make the biggest mistake of my life?” she wondered out loud.
Everything in her room screamed yes, the funny notes he wrote her in study hall, the millions of pictures on her walls, and the semi-living rose he gave her on their first date. But they were back to square one. He probably would never forgive her. He shouldn’t. Silver just wanted to forget about it, and everything that happened. This wasn’t like Damon, who she was happy to get rid of. This hurt. Silver popped two Tylenol PMs into her mouth and was asleep in minutes.
