Chapter 31 (Silver POV)

Silver’s disappearance and her bruises were the talk of Woodward. “Where were you?” “What happened?” and “Are you ok” peppered every class she set foot in. She and Maika made up some story about getting lost in the city while visiting a friend, who got a little violent when drunk.

Finally, it was the weekend, the weekend Silver and Maika planned to double date with Damien and Spark. There was a small movie theater about 20 minutes outside of Woodward, and it was playing some dumb romantic comedy.

“Two please?” Maika pushed fifteen dollars under the glass.

“Thank you” the lady said and pushed two tickets back.

“You know you can put your hood down, you look beautiful” Maika whispered in her ear.

“No, I look awful. My face is a blackish-blue color” she sighed. Silver was wearing a pink hoodie from J crew with the hood up. Maika may not be ashamed or her marred face, but she was. Every morning was a reminder of that hell. The P.E.A. hadn’t come back to Woodward yet, and that worried her as them being there.

“It is physically impossible for you to look awful in my eyes.” Maika put an arm around her shoulders.

“It’s not your eyes I’m worried about” she looked up at him.

“If we’ve got each other, then who else do we need?” he asked in a way that made her heart flutter and her knees go weak. Silver sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder. Suddenly Damien bounded up.

“Hey! S, come get some popcorn with me!” he exclaimed in typical, over-excited Damien fashion.

“Ok… I’ll be right back, ok Stud?” Silver pulled out of Maika’s arms.

“Fine, ditch me for your other boyfriend. I see how this is” Maika fake pouted.

“I’m the hotter one” Damien stuck out his tongue.

“How can you compete with this?” Maika said, striking a pose.

“Oh yea? Well…” Damien started, but Silver interrupted.

“You’re both hot. Come on Damien.” She looped her arm though his and they walked off to concessions.

“Oh. My. God. The smell of movie popcorn is spectaculazing” Damien smiled.

“Seriously it’s impossible to walk by and NOT get some” Silver nodded in agreement.

“Do you think that’s why they make it smell so good?

“Hm, that a pretty cunning plot, lure unsuspecting victims in with the smell of delicious popcorn.”

“I like it. The victims are powerless under the smell of the popcorn. And then, with our masterful plot, we’ll take over the world” Damien said, a look of feigned determination on his face.

“You forgot the evil laugh” Silver commented, genuinely smiling.

“Not here” Damien smiled back.

She could tell he didn’t buy the city story. He tried to hide it, but Silver knew him too well. The doubt was written across his face.

“Oh, S, I forgot to ask Spark if he wanted butter, I’ll be right back ok?” Damien said suddenly.

“Don’t be long, my love” she teased. Damien wagged his eyebrows mock-suggestively, and then disappeared into the crowd. No sooner was he out of sight then a new voice called her name, one that chilled her to the bone.
