Chapter 37 (Silver POV)
It took Maika a while to get used to the wolf being gone, and Silver knew it wasn’t easy. He still wore the moonstone around his neck, more out of habit than anything else. The wolf never stayed far from Maika. It liked the forest surrounding Woodward, and seemed content living there. Maika seemed happy too, not constantly worried he’d kill someone or hating what he was. Sometimes Silver would catch him staring out the window in study hall, looking for the wolf. Eventually it started to show up, sometimes near Silver’s dorm and sometimes near Maika’s.
“We need to name him” Silver said one day as they sat on the bridge of queens, petting the wolf.
“Like what? Donut?” Maika said teasingly.
“No something like… Storm?”
“Hm, I actually like it” Maika turned to the wolf, “What about you?” The wolf opened one eye, and then closed it again, nodding off back to sleep.
“I’ll take that as a yes” Silver smiled.
May soon faded into June, and June meant graduation. Silver sat nervously in her chair. They were just ending the J’s and she was the first K.
“Silver Kamrada” Mrs. H, her chosen teacher, announced. Silver gracefully stood up and strode up to the stage. Mrs. H handed her the diploma. “Congratulations Silver you’re done” Mrs. H smiled.
“Thank you” Silver replied nervously. As a Woodward tradition every departing senior had to share a departing memory or two and what they were doing.
“Well…” Silver started as soon as she stepped up to the mic. “Woodward has been my home since sophomore year I met my best friend here…” she smiled at Damien. “And the most amazing boyfriend anyone could ever ask for…” she beamed at Maika. “And this place is one I’ll never forget. I promise if I marry a millionaire I’ll be generous.” The crowd laughed a little. “I plan to study paranormal sciences at East Carolina University, and minor in art” Silver said, then gracefully left the stage.
She had to do something to help the paranormals. Once the paranormal touched your life, you can't just go back to normal. Suddenly the shock set in. she was done. No more Woodward, no more prom queen, nothing was ever going to be the same again.
“Damien Port” Silver watched as Damien gleefully took his diploma.
“My favorite memory… it’s hard to narrow down, well I guess being named valedictorian has to be up there,” Damien smiled adorably. “I’ll have to admit, they all involve my best friend, whether it was traveling Europe with her, or just hanging out with her and my roommate. I plan to attend East Carolina University to study fashion journalism and fashion marketing” Damien said, smile stretching from ear to ear. At least she’d still have Damien at college.
A little while later “Maika Suliken” rang through the speakers. Maika accepted his diploma and walked up to the mic.
“I started this year as the shy, quiet, transfer student. I didn’t really want anything to do with anyone, and I didn’t think a thing would ever change that. I was wrong. I met someone who didn’t care how quiet I was, or how I was the new kid. I met my girlfriend. She changed my life completely and I wouldn’t have it any other way. That is my favorite Woodward memory. It was every moment I spent with her.” The entire female population in the crowd sighed, including Silver. “I plan to study paranormal sciences at East Carolina University. Thank you Woodward for the best year of my life” Maika said, and then he strode off the stage. Finally every last name had been called. Silver tossed her cap into the air with everyone else’s, then let the rain of black caps fall around her.
When it was all said and done Silver dodged all the teary eyes girls and dumb-founded boys and ran into Maika’s arms. He picked her up and spun her around joyfully.
“We did it Princess!” she exclaimed.
“Of course we did” Maika set her down and suddenly looked nervous.
“What’s wrong Stud?” Silver asked. Maika took her hand in his.
“Silver Kamrada, I love you so much. Life without you would be an unimaginable hell. I swear if your answer is what I’m hoping for then I’ll be the happiest person alive, possibly ever. Silver, I promise to love you every moment of forever, will you marry me?” Maika dropped to one knee and pulled out a velvet box. He fumbled a little, and then opened the lid to reveal a breath-taking diamond ring.
Silver flashed back to when he asked her to prom, and she’d thought he’d been asking her to marry him. Back then she hadn’t known what to say, she wasn’t ready. She’d grown up a lot in the past couple months. Now she knew what to say.
“Yes” she said, nodding and biting her lip to keep from shrieking in happiness.
Maika’s face lit up in joy. He slipped the ring on her finger then kissed her. Maika was her soul mate. Silver knew it was true the moment his lips met hers. She’d never want anyone else; Maika was all she’d ever need, forever.
Suddenly something brushed against her leg. She pulled away to look at Storm. He looked back at them with his yellow eyes and a doggy smile on his face. Silver reached down to pet the wolf and watched her diamond sparkle in the sun. Maika lightly turned her to face him.
“I love you” he whispered, then kissed her again.
Silver smiled into the kiss, already dreaming about their life together.
