Dakota's POV:

I had reached my house and opened the door. My mother was sitting at the dining table. She was seaming a dress, probably for Dís. "Hey mother! Are you okay?" she looked up from her work "Yes I'm fine. Are you done with work?" she asked me. "No, but I asked if I could check up on you. Oh and Dís wanted me to say "hi" so here you go, hi." My mother chuckled. "Is that one of her new dresses?" I asked her curiously. "Yes, it is." She answered. "And it's almost done. I'd say it would take me 5 minutes to finish it." She added. "I'll take it with me when you're done. I'll be working tonight as well. I got asked to assist them at dinner. OH! Before I forget tomorrow I'll be dining with Thorin!... probably." she stared at me with surprise on her features.

"Mother is something wrong?" "I don't know. Who was it that asked you?" Why is that relevant? I mean does it really matter? "Well, Fili and Kili asked me but I didn't reply because I got confused by their question. Then Dís startled me and she also asked me and I can't so no to her because she's my boss so I accepted their invitation." I answered. "And do you also know why Fili and Kili asked you?" Why was she asking me these questions? Is it that important to know? "Thorin is leaving for a meeting in two days and because I am his best friend they thought that it was a good idea." I was getting a little irritated with my mother but I didn't let it show.

"I see... and you are sure that is the only reason?" my mother continued. "Yes! What other reason would there be?!" I almost yelled. "Oh, nothing. You're right it's probably the only reason." She said with a smile. I knew that she was lying. She didn't agree with me, but I wasn't going to argue with her. I wasn't in the mood for it. I waited until my mother finished the dress. "Here you go! Her dress is done!" I stood up from the chair I was in. "Thanks. I shall bring it to her immediately. When I'm done with my duties I'll come home to cook you dinner and maybe change my dress." "Alright sweetie! Then I'll see you later!" she gave me a kiss on my cheek and I left my home to deliver the dress.

I knocked on the door of Dís' room for the thousandth time.

"Come in!" I entered the room. "How was your mother?" Dís asked me. "She's fine. She finished your dress." I gave her the dress and she looked at it. "OH, Dakota it's beautiful! Your mother is really talented!" she said with a pleased and very happy face. "I'm pleased you like it. I'll tell her when I see her this evening." I said while walking into the bathroom and grabbing the clothes Dís was wearing before she took her bath. "Tonight? Weren't you going to assist us?" she asked a little confused. "I am, but I have to go back to make dinner for her and maybe change in something more presentable." Dís looked at me.

"You aren't bothered by what my sons said to you are you?" she looked into my eyes somewhat concerned. "No! Of course not! Why would I be bothered by what they say to me? That would be stupid... right?" "Indeed. It would be stupid to let two little stubborn boys make you feel like you need to be more presentable in front of your best friend who has seen you when you were crying, dirty, sick and who knows what more." She said to me, hoping to encourage me. I sighed.

She continued "Kota... you don't have to be who people want you to be. Just be yourself, okay?" I just nodded. I know she is right but that doesn't mean it's easy. So I just did what I always do. I nod; I smile and ask her if she needs anything. "Do you need anything else Milady?" I smile at her hoping for an answer. "No I'm fine. Thanks. Why don't you go outside? I hear the weather is lovely." I nod again. "If you need me I'll be outside somewhere. Oh, and just ask me if you need me don't wait until I'm done please." She chuckled. "I'll call you. Now go!" I bowed, picked up a book I always take with me to work and headed outside.

**********

I love being outside. It smells so... so... grassy? I sat down on the ground and leaned with my back against the big oak behind me. I started reading my book. It was a story about a dwarf prince and a cook. They fell in love but because of the rank difference they couldn't be together. The king banished her from the kingdom and the prince went to search for her.
