When the bell rang, I ran out, bringing Tori with me. We walked on our way to study hall. Well, of course we walked. We could run, but then we’d get yelled at.
“He so totally likes you, Ollie,” Tori said, giggling.
“No he doesn’t,” I said, trying to keep the blush from my cheeks.
“Ah!” she squealed, “I see you turning pink! Don’t hide it!”
I swatted away the finger she pointed at me and blushed against my will.
I’m internally conflicted. I think Holden is very attractive. I mean, have you seen his face? And his lips… but he’s totally a male chauvinist. And he’s a jerk.
I don’t like either.
And therefore, I don’t like him.
The bell rang just as we reached our classroom, diving into our seats. I sit next to my brother, Tray, while Tori is in front of me.
“So, Oliver, I need you to do my social studies homework.”
I laughed, “Sure thing, Tracy.”
I took his crossword puzzle and filled things in quickly, my hand flying on the page. I was so into the homework, I didn’t notice Holden come in. Tori nudged me, making me see Holden staring at me with a smirk on his face.
“And you would be… Holden Cash, right?” Mr. Stawicki asked.
“Yes, sir.”
Mr. Stawicki was quite old, and had served in two wars. He was always impressed when ‘youngsters’ addressed him with respect.
“I can tell you’ll be a fine young man. Now, tell me son, why are you late?”
“Well, sir,” Holden said, purposely adding that ‘sir’ in there, “I’m new and I don’t have my bearings around the school yet. I’ve been late to my first three periods already. I think I should have an escort, but the school doesn’t issue one.”
Mr. Stawicki grunted disapprovingly. “The school doesn’t issue one? Well I will! Do you recognize anyone from your other classes in here?”
That sneaky bastard.
Holden pretended to look at the class, but I know who he’s going to choose.
“Tori.”
Thank the Lord!
“And Ollie.”
Dammit all to hell!
“But I’m not sure who I have more classes with.”
“Out with your schedules then, the both of you.”
Tori and I rushed to get out the paper; Mr. Stawicki didn’t like to wait. You think he would’ve learned patience, having to wait in ditches for hours.
Mr. Stawicki said, “Olive, you will be showing Holden to his classes. You share the same schedule.”
Well there goes the joy out of all my classes.
I sat there fuming, my hand drawing furiously on paper. The paper was snatched away from me.
“Watch it, Ollie! That’s my homework! Jeez,” he muttered.
Holden came bounding down the aisle, sitting on the other side of me and smiled at me. This got a response from Tray.
“Hey, what are you doing, smiling at my sister like that?” he asked, getting defensive.
Holden looked at Tray and smiled, “Haven’t you heard? We’re best friends.”
“Best friends my ass,” I mumbled.
Tray sensed my distress and smirked.
He’s a sneaky bastard, too.
“Best friends, eh? Well, I’m Tray, Ollie’s younger brother.”
Holden looked confused. “But… you look like you're the same age.”
Tori looked up from what she was doing and smiled. “They’re twins!”
Holden looked at me and exclaimed, “Best friend! Why didn’t you tell me that?”
“Because I don’t like you,” I huffed.
“Now, now, Oliver, you can’t not like your best friend,” Tray said, talking to me like I was a five year old who just cut the hair off of my doll.
“Shut up, Travis,” I sneered.
Tray’s eyes narrowed at me. “I no longer like you,” he stated, and then turned in his seat.
“Good,” I said loudly, “Because now you won’t bother me to come to my sleepovers.”
Tray turned around immediately and apologized. “No, I’m sorry, Ollie, I love you, you’re my favoritist sister in the world.”
Holden laughed. “What’s so good about her sleepovers?”
Tray looked at him like he had grown an extra head, which made me laugh loudly.
“Olive J. Camden throws the best damn sleepovers ever. Yeah, Tori’s always the only one invited, but it is still so amazingly wicked. They have a scary movie marathon and all of these sweets and then we stay up all night and then we play games and then we do all this amazing stuff.”
Holden smirked. “Sounds like fun.”
Tori whipped her head up once more and said, “You should totally come! We have our next sleepover on um… which day was it, Ollie? Friday?”
“No,” I deadpanned.
Tori tilted her head in confusion, “I’m pretty sure it’s Friday, see, it says it in this text you sent me the other day-”
“Tori!” I exclaimed.
“What?”
I smacked my forehead, wishing I had another friend that could take a hint.
Tori smiled. “Okay, so this Friday at seven, Ollie’s house, ‘kay Holden?”
“No,” I interjected.
“Why not,” Holden pouted.
“It’s my house and I say no.”
Tray said, “It’s my house too, so I say he comes.”
“But I’m older, plus, it’s my sleepover.”
“Yeah, but I want Holden to come too-”
“I want Holden to come also,” Holden said.
Tori giggled and continued, “Which means you are now officially outnumbered, Ms. Camden, three to,” she made a popping noise and tapped my nose, “one.”
“You all suck,” I said, right before the bell rang.
“Now, Ollie, how about escorting me to my next class?” Holden asked.
“Bite me,” I said.
“With pleasure.”
“Hey! That’s my sister, dude.” Tray said, pointing a finger at Holden.
Holden held up his hands and said, “Joking.”
“Yeah, you better be,” Tray mumbled.
