A week had passed since I had helped Tori with her project. Holden did what I suggested and tried out for the football team. He was apparently very good at football.
I was home, playing Mario Kart with Nick.
“Haha, I’m in the lead!” he yelled.
“Not for long,” I whispered.
I tossed a green shell at him, making him trip. I zipped past him, jumping up in triumph.
“Haha, sucka!”
I started to dance, rubbing my victory in Nick’s face. Just then, Tray burst through the door, throwing his duffel bag to the side, instructing Holden to do the same. I stopped my victory dance and sat down, starting another game. Tray sat down next to me, putting his legs over the arm rest and putting his head on my shoulder.
“Ugh, Tray, you reek. Go take a bath.” I said, scrunching up my nose.
He laughed and stood up, taking off his shirt and throwing it at my face.
“Oh my God, I think I just died for a second,” I said, hurriedly taking to shirt off my face. Nick used my temporary blindness to his advantage and hit me with a red shell, throwing a banana as he passed me. I hit the banana and spun around, making me curse.
“Ollie, you know you’re not supposed to curse,” Nick said.
“Oh shut up, Nick. I heard you curse yesterday when you cut your finger on that piece of glass.”
Holden walked in, sitting next to me.
“So, best friend, I have some news that will make you very happy,” he said.
“You’re leaving to move to Russia?” I asked, not tearing my eyes off of the game.
Holden chuckled. “Nope, I joined the football team.”
“As what, the water boy?”
“No,” Tray said, walking in with a towel on his head, “He’s the quarterback.”
“Isn’t that your position?”
“Ollie, no. I’m the fullback. Completely different.” He said, scoffing.
“And the quarterback is important?”
Holden and Tray gasped and Nick paused the game to look at me.
“Yes!” they said simultaneously.
“I’m the one who scores, so yes I’m very important.”
“Congratulations. Now Nick, I’m ready to beat your ass.”
Every day for the past week, Holden has been bothering me less. I’ve been noticeably happier; I’ve been singing a lot and skipping- two things I don’t do often. I took my camera and went outside, taking pictures of random things on my block. I was going down the block closer to the park that was at the elementary school when I heard rapid footsteps behind me. I turned around and took a picture of whoever it was. When I saw the picture, I smiled. It was of Holden and Tray, but the faces that they were making and their movements were captured.
The best part of the picture, one of my best qualities, was that they were still and everything else around them was blurry, as it if was moving even though it was quite the opposite. When they caught up with me, I showed them the picture.
