Long note at the end. But the story itself is like, four pages, so you still get a lot of that.
When I walked into school, the halls were decorated in Christmas decorations. I had totally forgotten about it. I looked at a calendar on the outside of the main office and realized that it was only two weeks away, which meant that winter break was approaching.
"Ollie! Ollie, come here!"
I turned around to see a short girl weaving throughout the crowd. When she got to me, she leaned over and put her hands on her knees, breathing deeply.
She stood up quickly and glared behind her. "Oh my Jesus, people are so annoying."
I laughed, "Hey Miranda."
She turned back around to me and handed me a flyer.
"I'm having a Christmas party and I want you to be there. Mostly so you can take pictures, but you can wile out too."
"I can what?"
Miranda laughed. "Wile! Have fun! I hope I can see you there!" She turned away and leapt through the crowd, pushing anyone who was in her way.
I looked at the flyer, but all I could think about was how Holden would be there with... Serena. The girl who had successfully taken Holden away because she knew what she wanted; because I couldn’t see how great Holden was in the beginning.
But it didn’t really matter now. I knew there was a reason that I kept my guard up; boys would only cause pain and it was better to keep them away.
Holden had ruined the friendship he had with my brother, leaving him alone most days. He had tried so hard to get me and be our friend that he had excluded everyone else. Everyone knew Holden as ‘Tray Camden’s best friend’ and nothing else. Holden would occasionally try to talk to Tray or Tori, but they wouldn’t even acknowledge his existence.
When it came to me, Holden would stare from across the room, or from across the hallway. He had gone back to sitting as far away from me as possible, just like when we had agreed to stop talking to each other a few weeks ago.
I used to wonder why I had never seen Serena, until I realized that she went to a private school that was down the road. I think that if she did go to our school, I would have been arrested for manslaughter. Surely, as soon as she walked in the door, my heel would’ve been driven into her skull.
I didn’t even know why I felt this strongly; Holden was just a simple crush.
Oh my God.
I like Holden. I hadn’t realized it before, but I actually and genuinely like Holden. I didn’t cringe when I thought of him or frown when he was around. It was a major change from when we had first met, and I didn’t even know it.
“Hey Ollie, we’re going to Miranda’s party, right?” Tori bounded up to me and gave me a huge smile. “I hear kids from other schools are going, like that football player from Brian’s team.” She giggled. “He was adorable.”
I looked over at Tori, but something caught my eye. Holden was walking down the hall, eyeing the blue flyer that Miranda had handed him.
My mouth twitched slightly as I said, “You know, Tori, I don’t think I want to go that bad. It’s just a party and there’ll be others.”
Tori frowned slightly and turned around. She gasped and then turned around once more with her arms crossed. She stomped her foot and said, “Ollie, do not let that butt face ruin your school year. You have to yolo things up the ying-yang, okay? And if you don’t go, I’ll drag you there, kicking and screaming.”
