Note: Since there have been changes in terminology, such as YOLO, swag and etc, I’ll probably use them. Mostly YOLO, though, since I love saying it.

When it was time for lunch, I took my camera and sandwich and went back to the area Holden had taken me to earlier today. He gave me a map to show me how to get to it and back to school. I ignored the buzzing coming from my pocket. I assumed it would be Tori or Tray, wondering where I was.

I sat down on the grass and took pictures of the scenery. It was so perfect. It was fifteen minutes before Holden came and sat down next to me.

“Remember when I said that you were like a Rubik’s cube?” (Chapter 15 if anyone wants to read it.)

I smiled, “Yeah, I do.”

“I think I’ve figured you out.”

I raised an eyebrow, “Oh you have, have you?”

Holden nodded. “Would you like to hear my theories?”

“Do tell.”

I turned my body to face him while he looked out to the landscape. He took a deep breath before beginning, “Well, you’re tough as nails. You don’t like to admit when you need help, or to admit anything, for that matter. You act tough, but you have a loving side. I can tell you love your brother and Tori; I can see that when you look at them and how you treat them. Your creative and love taking pictures. You love to admire the beauty of everything because you can always find it. You don’t like flowers. You love history.” He paused for a moment and glanced at me. “I also know that you’ve been hurt. You’ve been hurt beyond repair, but I want to be the one to fix you. You’ve built up walls around you, and I want to be the one who tears them down.”

I bit my lip and looked out to the field. “Seems like you have all the colors in their place.”

“Not yet.”

I looked at Holden to see him looking intently at me.

“There’s two sides I haven’t completely figured out yet, but I’m trying. One side is why you don’t like me, and the other is why you even gave me a chance.”

I sighed. “I can’t completely trust you. I don’t want to get hurt again. The only reason I gave you a chance was because Tori and Tray kept telling me to. But if it makes you feel any better, I don’t really regret it.”

Holden leaned over and kissed me. When he pulled away, he put his forehead against mine.

“I’m glad you did give me a chance.” He smirked and said, “By the end of this school year, I will make you love me.”

I pulled away and laughed. “You have seven more months. Good luck.”

“Ollie! Where have you been?” Tori yelled. When she saw me at my locker, she pounced on me and shook my shoulders. “I had to spend it with Tray, your brother, Tray! The same one who put worms in my hair when we were younger!”

I laughed and patted her head. “I’m sorry, I was with Holden.”

Tori smiled and let go of me. “You were? That’s okay then.”

I rolled my eyes and started singing while putting my stuff in my bag. Tori started giggling.

“You are so totally in love, Ollie.”

I scoffed. “No I’m not.”

“Oh yeah?” Tori smiled even wider and giggled as she wiped her finger on my cheek. “Then why are you wearing blush?”

I shrugged. “Because I’m pale.”

Tori giggled, “Yeah you are.”

“Hey!”

“But why are you singing a Taylor Swift song?”

I looked at her. “Taylor Swift is the princess of break up songs. That’s not being in love.”

Tori gave me a smug look and said, “You were singing Love Story.”

I put on my poker face and said, “So?”

“So you love him! Ollie loves Holden, Ollie loves-”

I put my hand on her mouth to prevent anyone from hearing her. “Tori, shut up! People can hear you!”

“Like me?”

I turned around and Holden was there, leaning against the lockers with a smirk. That seems to be the formation his lips are always in.

I gulped and glared at Tori. “Don’t listen to her, she’s telling lies.”

Holden smiled and put an arm around me. “I know how you really feel.”

I was on my computer when I heard music. I checked my computer, but that wasn’t it. Then I thought it was coming from Tray’s room. He wasn’t home, so I thought it must be his alarm that goes off at random times. I opened my door and walked to his room, but realized the music got quieter.

“Hmm…”

As I walked back to my room, the music got louder. I went back to my computer and thought about where the noise was coming from. I walked around the room before getting to the window, where the music was loudest. I looked out to see Holden there with a boom box. I opened the window and he lowered the music.

“What happened,” I said, “You ran out of pebbles?”

Holden laughed and shook his head. “No. Just wanted to see you.”

“Why?”

“Because I missed you.”

Well that just instantly melted my heart.

“Well we can see each other in the morning. Don’t miss me until then.”

“No promises,” Holden said, and then walked out of my backyard.

I smiled and went to bed, thinking about how sweet Holden is.

About an hour later, I was still awake. Then I heard whispering coming from outside my window. I realized I hadn’t closed it from before but when I went to, Holden’s head popped up, scaring me.

“What the fuck?” I put a hand over my heart, trying to calm it down.

Holden smiled sheepishly. “Sorry. I told you I missed you.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, I know.”

He climbed into my room and sat down on the bed. He patted the spot next to him and put an arm around me when I sat down.

“Hey, Ollie, guess what.”

I turned to look at him and as soon as I did, he kissed me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I put my arms around his neck. He slowly pushed me towards the bed and pulled away.

“Well, guess,” he said, giving me a quick peck.

“Um…” I began, not really able to concentrate on anything but the way his lips felt against mine. “You… forgot to turn the oven off at your house?”

Holden smiled and shook his head. “Nope.” He gave me one more kiss and said, “I love you.”

Then he kissed me again, not breaking it off.

It was a good thing, too, because I wouldn’t be able to say it back.

I don’t love Holden.

And I know it would break his heart to hear that.
