When he pulled away, I was stunned. He took a step back and still seemed angry.
"Now do you get it?" he asked.
I couldn't say anything. I was still in shock. After a few minutes, Holden's anger dissipated. Now he seemed slightly sad. His shoulders slumped a little and he had thrown his mask on the floor. I could see some of my lip gloss on his lips.
"And now that you know how I feel, or have an inkling of what I feel, I can leave you alone forever."
He turned around and walked out of the nearest exit, leaving my life forever.
The end.
Just kidding.
I'm still really stunned, though. I mean, Holden likes me? I've made it very clear I don't enjoy when he's around.
And no, I'm not going to start thinking about it and say, "Oh wait, I DO like him! In fact… I might even love him!"
That's not how real life works.
If it did, I'd probably be pregnant with Holden's baby right now and in a love/hate relationship with him.
I swallowed hard and put a hand to my head. I have no idea what to think. I didn’t have time, because the door leading to the gym burst open and it revealed Tori and Tray.
“Where did Holden go?” Tray asked, looking down both sides of the hallway.
Tori didn’t say anything. She came up to me and hugged me. Tray walked up to us and pointed, his finger going back and forth.
“What’s going on? Why can’t I feel the twin vibe?”
“Because this is a best friend vibe, Tray,” Tori said, hugging me tighter.
Tray walked up to me and looked me in the eyes. “What’s wrong?”
I looked at him for a few seconds before looking away. I didn’t really feel like talking. But then I remembered something. I pulled away from Tori and looked around for Henry. He was by the snack table, looking angry. I walked up to him and apologized immediately.
“Henry, I am so sorry. Holden started acting like a weirdo and just-”
“No, Olive. Don’t apologize. It’s obvious you’d go for the football player,” he said. He sighed and then walked away.
Wow. Holden’s managed to ruin my night twice. I stood there awkwardly for a moment, not knowing what to do. Tori and Tray came up to me a few minutes later, panting.
“It was really hard to get over here,” Tori said, leaning on the table. “People wouldn’t let us through so we had to dance our way through here.”
“I don’t ever want to dance again,” Tray said, leaning against the wall that the table was set up against.
I bit my lip, finally being able to think about what to do, despite the loud music. Finally I turned towards the doors and walked, knocking down anyone who was in my way. I turned back slightly to see if Tory and Tray were behind me. Instead, I saw a bunch of people glaring at me and then walking away. When I was able to see Tori and Tray, they were looking at me like I had grown an extra head. I put my hands out as if to say, “Well?” and then waved my hand to call them over. When they had begun to move, I continued walking, not stopping until I reached the car I drove here with.
“What’s going on, Ollie?” Tray said, getting a little sweaty.
I looked up at the sky and closed my eyes. It was starting to drizzle and I needed to feel cool.
“Holden kissed me,” I said, still facing the sky.
Tori giggled and clapped her hands. “Are you two together now?”
I looked at her and glared. “No,” I said, taking my keys out.
I got in the car, as did Tori and Tray.
“Why not?” Tori asked, leaning into the front from the back seat.
“Because I don’t like Holden!” I exclaimed, hitting the steering wheel.
“You should,” Tray said, looking out of the window.
“Why? He’s a jerk, he’s chauvinistic, and he keeps kissing me without my permission!”
Tray looked away from the window to glare at me. It was a glare so harsh, I thought I would melt.
“I keep telling you that Holden really likes you. He acts that way because he knows you’ll notice him! Even if your first meeting with him was a little messed up, he’s just trying to talk to you. When has he ever given you a reason to hate him?”
“When he told me to keep the driving to the women, when he followed me during school, when he ruined my date with Henry? Any of those ring a bell?” I asked, gripping the steering wheel. I took a deep breath and started the car. I turned on the music to ignore anything Tray had to say and dropped Tori off.
When we arrived home, I turned off the car and waited for Tray to say something.
“When was the last time you were happy with a guy since Alex?”
“I was happy with Henry!” I said, gesturing towards the direction of the school building.
Tray scoffed. “That nerd? I didn’t see you with him when we went inside.”
“Because Holden ruined that for me, too.”
Tray’s face softened. He put a hand on my shoulder and said, “Too? Listen, Olive, Holden isn’t Alex. I know that Alex has ruined all boys for you. But he’s nowhere near him. Don’t project your feelings for Alex onto Holden- he doesn’t deserve that. If you actually took the chance to know him, you’d probably like him. I’m not saying you should barge into his house and declare your love for him-”
“I don’t even like him.”
Tray sighed. “Right, but all I’m saying is that you should give him a chance. Just try and get to know him. I know that Holden could be good for you. He seems like your perfect match.”
Tray started to say something else but I couldn’t take it anymore. I couldn’t take him trying to force Holden onto me. Did no one get that I didn’t like Holden?
I got out of the car and ran into the house and up to my room, ignoring my mother’s calls of dinner and my brother’s calls of video games. I just lay down on my bed and closed my eyes, trying to drown out the past month.
And what better way to do that than with music?
