“Charlotte…” Someone called from over my head. “Charlotte…”
I heard myself grumble something like ‘go away’ incoherently. It was too early for this. I’d only collapsed and gone to sleep like a minute ago. I could still taste alcohol on my tongue. And from the way my head is pounding, I guess I’m getting a migraine. Whoever you are, please leave.
Matthew cussed beside me. “Kayla, fuck off.”
“not until I talk to Charlotte.” She sang back. I shoved my face in my pillow, hoping to melt into Matt’s arms. Hang on, Matt. I shuffled against him. And his very naked body pressed against mine.
“Kayla.” I screamed, sitting up, with the blanket around my chest. “get out.”
“and she notices. Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. I’ll be downstairs.” She winked and left, her footsteps moving down the staircase.
“god, my head hurts.” I groaned, collapsing back into the bed.
“mine too.”
“We drank too much last night.” I sighed, letting my eyes drift closed again, trying to ignore the throbbing in my skull. “way too much.”
“It was fun though.” A sloppy kiss was pressed against the side of my shoulder, before Matt could be heard sinking back into the covers. I laughed quietly and turned into his body, soaking in his warmth and cuddling up to his chest, loving the way his arm tightened around me.
“CHARLOTTE!” Kayla yelled.
“please get rid of her so I can sleep.” Matt muttered, retracting his arm from my back.
“I’ll try.” I replied, swinging my legs over the side of the bed and scooping my underwear and Matt’s shirt off the floor, pulling them on hurriedly.
“And Charl, babe?” He called as I was halfway out the door.
“yeah?”
“grab me some Advil.”
“gotcha.”
“And coffee. Lot’s of coffee.” I couldn’t help but laugh. And then wince. Maybe I needed some Advil too.
“good night?” Kayla asked, as I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and scrawled a note to remind me to go grocery shopping, pulling out the painkillers and swallowing two.
“as good as ever.” I smirked, clearing my throat to get rid of it before turning to face her. “How about yours?”
Her face took on a dreamy quality, her eyes glazing over, “Oh god Charl, he was so amazing. He didn’t drink so he could give me a ride home and we just talked. His mate asked him if he wanted to go for a smoke and he said no. He was too comfortable hanging out with me. That’s a good sign right?”
“great sign.” I agreed. “did he kiss you?”
“don’t even get me started.” She sighed, all reminiscent. “It was awesome. He said I looked great so I really needed to thank you.”
“maybe next time leave it for a couple of hours and let us get up first.” Matt chuckled lightly, coming through the doorway into the kitchen, boxers slung low around his hips, holding a hand out for the Advil. I tossed it to him, and turned to Kayla again as she spoke,
“well maybe you should get to sleep earlier and then maybe you’d be a tiny bit more awake.” She teased.
“you been with that girl?” Matt asked, his voice light, “going to sleep earlier isn’t an option.”
“Matthew. Do you really have to go there?” I asked, shaking my head.
“Hey, babe, blame her, she asked for it.”
“Shut up, friend stealer.”
“at least I don’t break into houses.” Matt shot back, laughing. The friendly arguments were nice to hear, in the weirdest way. It meant a lot to me that they got on this well.
“that’s good question, how the hell did you get in here?” I asked.
She rolled her eyes, looking at me as if I was dumb. “I knocked the door for ten minutes, called both of your phones and then tried the handle. You didn’t lock it.”
“I have a hangover and it hurts. Like I was going to answer my cell.”
“when it’s your bestest friend, you need to pick up whatever the time, place or situation.” She smiled.
“I’ll remember that for the future.” Rolling my eyes at her was becoming an occurring theme this morning.
“You’d do well too.” Kay slid into a stool at the island, stealing an apple.
“coffee Charl?” Matt asked.
“Yep. So Kayla, what’s the deal with Alex, you going out again? And I wanna hear about this kiss. Did he ask you to be his girlfriend? You aren’t getting away that easily.”
“Did I get this talk?” Matt asked, amusedly. “The first date and kiss and asking you out and all that?”
“Hell yes,” Kayla sighed, “Who else do you think listened to all that ‘Matt is soooooooo amazing’ rubbish?”
“Kayla,” I warned, “Stop dodging the question.” I ignored Matt’s smirks from the corner of my eye, knowing he’d be all smug about that with me later.
She grinned, “nothing gets past you does it?”
“nothing to do with you.” I admitted, “I’ve known you a long time I guess it just happens.”
“Well he asked me out again, not to be his girlfriend, just a date. But for dinner. I’m not so sure I’m ready for the dinner stage. I mean, a party is nothing, but dinner, you actually have to talk straight for however long. I’m pretty sure I’d embarrass myself and zone out and stare at him. He’s too freaking hot.”
“well, take some advice from someone who spaces out pretty much every day, hardly anyone notices, unless you really stare at them, and if he does notice, he’ll probably just kiss you again to bring you out of it. If anything, fake spacing out for the kiss. You’ll appreciate it.”
She shrugged, “Still not so sure about it,”
“Then just ask him to go to the movies or something. Kayla, if he likes you that much then he’ll do it anyway.” I replied, as Matt slid a steaming coffee in front of me. “thanks baby.”
“you got it. I’m headed back to bed. Later Kayla.”
“bye Matt.” She waved slightly and then looked at me, biting her lip. “How about we double? Please?”
“oh no. No way.” I shook my head, “Me and Matt aren’t doing anything. Get over it. You aren’t even a couple yet, won’t inviting someone like freak him out?”
“I guess, but please think about it? I think it’d be cool.” She pouted and puppy dog eyes me and I was sold.
“I’ll think about it. That’s not a guarantee, ok?”
“not a guarantee, got it. Now go back to bed with Matthew, I’ll let myself out. Call you later.” She stood and hugged me. She knew I’d say yes, I could see it on her face. Dammit.
I let it go with a hefty sigh and climbed the stairs to my room as the front door shut. Time to sleep off this hangover.
