“And when we first got together, he was friends with all these girls, I always thought things were going on but Jake and Leighton swore they were all just friends. It was so creepy.” I spoke. “Plus the last few weeks he’s been so close to all the girls who sit with your sister that I can’t help but think he’s doing it again. Cheating possibly.”
I really didn’t know why I was telling him all of this. I felt like, within the past two hours, I’d literally laid mine and Matthew’s relationship out for Alex.
We’d recently moved into the lounge. I’d opened a second bottle of wine. Alex’s head rested on my leg, listening intently, comfortably. He barely interrupted. Just lay there and listened and sipped orange juice, speaking only to comfort or offer an opinion.
“Oh god. You only asked what was wrong. What the fuck am I doing? How have you not fallen asleep?” I asked, giggling, running a hand through my hair nervously.
“I like listening to you. You needed someone to talk too and I’m right here. You don’t need to hold back, Charl. Plus I don’t think I can move. Way too comfortable and I’m too stuffed from your amazing mac and cheese. The only real option is to sit here and listen and try to not fall asleep.” He replied jokingly.
I pushed his shoulder.
“Well thanks. And by the way, that mac and cheese was not the best that I’ve ever made. I do killer PB&J sandwiches.” I smiled.
“I’ll have to try them sometime.” Alex grinned up at me.
“So, why aren’t you hanging with Kayla? I thought she dropped everything for you.” I asked, purely inquisitive.
“yeah, she usually does. Her dad seems to want her around the house tonight. She’s not allowed out tomorrow either, which is crap, seeing as we have the day off school.” He shrugged against my leg, closing his eyes.
“Christ, Lex, I don’t think any of us are getting any at the moment.” I giggled. “I’m in a fight with my boyfriend and you can’t even see your girlfriend.”
“I know right?” He laughed back. “I guess mates gotta stick together in times like these.”
“Mates?” I questioned, laughing quietly.
“friends, buddies, amigo’s. That’s what we are right?” Alex grinned, reaching back and patting my knee.
“sure, Alex, whatever floats your boat.” I smiled,
“how charming.” He sighed, contentedly. We stayed there in silence for a couple of minutes. Which changed to ten, then fifteen. Then twenty.
Then Alex stretched in my lap. “I really should get going. It’s 9 at night. My mom’ll be blowing a fuse.”
“shit, right. Yeah. I guess you should.” He got up and I followed him to the door. I wasn’t so sure I was ready to be alone again after this great night with Alex. He pulled it open and rain showered down on us, splashing against the stone step. Lightning flashed and I squeaked as thunder rolled over.
“Well, fuck. I can’t freaking drive in that.” Alex exclaimed, shutting the door and leaning against it.
Then it got considerably worse as the lights flickered, once, then twice and then shut off completely.
A hand found mine in the dark and I jumped.
“god, you just saw me.” Alex laughed. “now first things first. Got any candles? Camping lights?”
“Candles? kitchen. Third drawer.” I panted, trying to calm my heartbeat. God, I hated thunder, lightening, rain. Anything stormy and that was it. I heard Alex’s hands hit the wall and follow it, stopping before moving to the opposite side of the hallway. He slipped into the kitchen and called out.
“How about matches?”
“no matches, but I’ve got a lighter?” I replied, putting my own arms out to find the cabinet in the hallway, where I knew Scotty kept back up lighters for his cancer stick addiction.
“perfect.” Alex spoke from somewhere behind me, “Meet you in the living room.”
Searching for the lighter, I stumbled over a few things before retrieving it and clicking it on, holding it a little way in front of me to find my way to Alex and the lounge.
“You look terrified.” He spluttered as I passed him the small source of light, allowing him to light the three candles he’d gotten and set them on the coffee table.
“I hate thunder.” I murmured, curling my knees against my chest. He moved closer. “Especially when I know I’m gonna be alone.”
“you won’t be. I don’t know about you, but for me, driving in storms is dangerous. Looks like I may have to wait it out here. Mind if I take that drink now?”
I shook my head and he downed the rest of my half filled glass of wine, before sitting beside me and winding an arm round my shoulder.
“Your shaking.” He commented, rubbing a hand up and down my arm. “Want me to grab you a blanket?”
I nodded, “my room’s top of the stairs. There’s one on the end of my bed.”
“k.” He replied, taking a candle and moving towards the hall and up the stairs. I sat there, strangely comforted by the fact Alex was staying.
Thunder rolled overhead and my eyes widened.
“Hey Lex? Hurry up please?”
“Charlotte, it’s thunder. It’s not going to hurt you. Christ girl, come here.” Both arms joined around my body, pulling me into his chest, wrapping a blanket around our legs. “How do you survive by yourself if your scared of thunder? What if we had a tornado?”
“I’d call you?” I replied, sheepishly. “Or Matthew, Jake or Leighton. Any one of you guys and I’d feel kinda safe.”
“well guaranteed we can get here in a tornado. Most roads get shut down and people get warned to stay in their houses.” He snickered.
“You’d let me die alone.” I pouted, shivering lightly, but I don’t think it had anything to do with the thunder outside or the cold this time.
“never.” Alex murmured. “now try and sleep. I promise I’ll stay. And seeing as we have nothing at all to do tomorrow, I guess we could hang out again?”
“Am I being used as a last resort?” I questioned, snuggling into him, helplessly.
“nope.” Alex laughed. “you’re the second person I asked. So second resort? Wanna hang?”
“What’d we be doing?” I asked, yawning. I didn’t even know why I was suddenly tired, I’d slept so much last night.
“We could go to the park. Eat?” Sounds great.
“That sounds cool.” I whispered.
“You sound sleepy.’ Alex chuckled. “you can sleep on me, I make a good pillow. So Kayla says.”
Kayla? What would she think of this? Me, sleeping on her boyfriend. Shit.
But my eyes drifted closed, before I could do anything about it. In Alex’s arms, I wasn’t even afraid of falling asleep in a storm. Strange. Because that’s the only thing I’ve feared since I was five years old.
Will update tomorrow. Comment; Let me know what you think :)
