“Charl? You ready babe?” Matt called through my house, after I heard the front door close.
“give me a couple seconds.” I replied, swiping on a thick layer of eyeliner to frame my brown eyes. Stepping back, there were footsteps on the stairs as I analyzed my outfit.
Dark skinny jeans, a plain white tank top and a black button-up cardigan, which hung off one shoulder, finished with a navy blue scarf round my neck. I’d curled my hair and it now hung in dark brunette waves, ending around the top of my ribs, my fringe hanging in it’s normal position over my forehead. I’d stuck black high heeled pumps on my feet and had a black plain clutch with my keys, money and cell inside.
Matt pushed the door open as I spritzed on perfume and gave my lips a final coating of strawberry flavored lipgloss.
“Hey.” He grinned.
“Hey.”
“you look good.” His eyes scanned over me. I did the same to him. Jeans, sneakers and a buttoned up shirt, the sleeves pushed towards his elbows. His eyes glittered in his face, his lips pursed in a smile, his cute button nose, looking extra adorable as he wrinkled it up and sniffed the air. “did you change something?”
“Mom sent some perfume from wherever they are.” I shrugged.
“it’s nice. You ready then?”
“uh-huh.”

He’d parked the car in the driveway and clicked it open as I locked the door.
“How’s your aunt?” I asked, breaking the silence in the car.
“still sick. I have to switch between my house, her house and practice and still get a little homework done somewhere in between it all. It’s kinda hectic.”
“Yeah. You didn’t tell me you made the team.” His hand pulled mine from my lap and he laced our fingers together, pulling them up to his face and brushing his lips against my knuckles.
“must’ve slipped my mind. It’s not the team I thought it was. It’s not something that I really wanna do anymore, but you know what my dad’s like…”
Matt’s dad had been pushing for him to be on the team since he even got to high school. I could imagine what he was like about it now. It made sense that he’d still be stuck on the whole sports scholarship dream for Matty to go to college.
“You don’t have to do what he wants.” I murmured.
Matt sighed. “Can we talk about this later, babe?”
“Whatever you want.”
The car was emerged in silence again.
When he pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, the first thing I managed to notice was Alex and Kayla, leaning against a silver car, arms wrapped around each other.

“Why did we agree to this?” I whispered to Matt as we got out, linking hands and walking over.
He just chuckled and whispered back, “I think it was you who agreed to it, nothing to do with me, baby.”
“Why didn’t you talk me out of it?”
“If you wanna leave any time, just tell me and we’ll go to yours.” He muttered, rubbing the back of my hand with his thumb.
Kayla squealed as we came to a stop in front of them, throwing her arms around me.
“I owe you big time.” She breathed, “this is so cool of you.” I just smiled back, shrugging and hugging her one handedly. The normal greetings followed before we even made a move to go inside.
“Well I booked a table.” Alex interrupted. “And we’re about five minutes late for it, standing out here.” He chuckled lightly and wrapped an arm around Kayla’s shoulder.
“lets go then Alex.” She giggled. Matt rolled his eyes at me, a grin on his face as he nodded back towards the car with a questioning expression. Biting my lip to hold back my own laughter I shook my head slightly and pulled him inside. Kayla would kill me if I left.

And it was actually going ok. We ordered food, talked. While Alex and Matt talked. Kayla said one word sentences between gazing helplessly at Alex and I just contributed minor opinions. But it was comfortable. Then halfway through eating, Matt’s cell rang.
“Mom.” He mouthed at me, trying not to interrupt Kayla and Alex’s staring contest across the table. He left me sat there as he walked out and answered it.
He was gone for all of ten minutes. Which felt like a lifetime. Especially with Kayla and Alex making eyes at each other across from me. It was enough to put anyone off their food and make them puke all over.
Was I this soppy in my relationship? I sure as hell hoped not.
