Monday came around before I was ready for it. I’d spent all the rest of Saturday in bed, sleeping off what might just be the worst hangover of my life so far.

Sunday, Matt convinced me that I should just chill out, and sit down with him in front of the TV. Needless to say, none of my homework got done. Usually, I had enough alone time at my empty house to get it all done, but with Matt staying over, I got barely any time to myself.

So when Kayla called on Monday morning, asking if I’d done the geography homework, I felt like bursting into tears. Then I realized the amount I actually had to do to only catch up on the one day when Matthew and I skipped, putting me behind for the entire week. Which in turn had me skipping all my morning lessons, in a mad scramble to get some work done.

It wasn’t that I was a nerd, it was more the fact that if my parents found out I was slipping in my grades, they’d probably come home, lecture me and to be honest, I could do without that. I was typically free, but if they found out I was disgracing the family name, they’d be down on me like a ton of bricks.

Right now, I was sitting in the library, twirling a strand of my mahogany colored hair round my fingers, reading three chapters of the history textbook in order to get my essay done, while flicking my eyes over to a geography worksheet that I totally didn’t understand. This is what you get when you miss lessons to shower with your boyfriend and then get a pile of work the next day back.

Sighing heavily, I scrawled notes on a lined piece of paper for my essay before writing out a basic plan for the paragraphs and the conclusion and turning my attention back to the math work I also had to do.

“I’ve never seen someone look that confused at one piece of work.” A voice chuckled, the chair opposite me sliding out against the library floor. My chocolate brown eyes flicked up and met chestnut ones.

Alex Parker was sitting across from me, smiling, exposing perfectly white teeth. “You stuck?” He asked.

“kinda.” I admitted, taken aback by how cute he actually was up close. I slid the sheet across the table and he took it from me, scanning his eyes over it with a smirk on his face.

“Yeah, tricky.” He teased. “not good at math?”

“not at all.” I replied.

“It took me ages to get it. My mom had to teach me. I felt like such a retard cause she’s a primary school teacher, so like 6 year olds, I thought she’d bring me teddy bear counters and shit, but it was actually easy.” He grinned. “your in luck. I’ve already studied this.”

“great,” I sighed, “want a pencil?”

“I’m not doing it for you.” Alex laughed, “but tell you what, seeing as your Kayla’s best friend, I’ll teach you a secret.”

“will it get it done quicker if I say yes?” I asked, laughing slightly. He rolled his eyes, chuckling and switched seats, sliding into the one beside me, starting to explain how to work out the first question. By the fourth, I was pretty sure I had it, but sitting this close to him, breathing in his cologne and the faint whiff of deodorant was having funny effects on my brain. He was joking and laughing and I had to constantly remind myself when I giggled that this was Kay’s soon-to-be boyfriend and that I had a boyfriend, who I was in love with.

“Do you understand?” This spacing out thing was really getting old.

I just nodded dumbly and he slid his seat away, flicking over my plans for my history essay as I continued the math.

“So, I was talking to Kayla yesterday…” Alex trailed, and I felt his eyes flick to me. “And she said when I was walking her home that she’d asked you to double with us. For dinner. You and Matt? She was kinda gutted that you said no.”

“I didn’t say no, I said I’d think about it. I have to talk to Matthew about it.” I interrupted.

“Well, you think he’d be into it? I really wanna take Michaela out again but she’s set on this double date idea. Honestly, I think it’s sorta tacky and you two have been dating ages so it’s gonna be more than a little awkward but she won’t let go of the plan so I thought maybe if I asked you, you’d come round.”

“Honestly, Alex, I don’t really think it’s a good idea.”

“Charlotte, come on, I really want to see Kayla again and she’ll only agree to go to the movies with me. I want to take her out properly. Please, just once.”

I knew I was going to regret it, but it was Kayla. I’d do anything for that girl. And Alex was practically begging me. Would it be so bad to help her out just this once?

“So, Saturday night?”

“time?” I asked, rolling my eyes slightly.

Alex grinned and pulled out his cell, swiping mine from the desk and typing his number into my contacts.

“around 7. I’ll text you the place.”

“ok.”

“Don’t forget to tell your boyfriend.” He reminded me, standing.

“I won’t.”

Yeah, I knew I was going to regret this.

“So, instead of asking me, which I’m not angry about by the way, you just signed me up to double with Kayla and the Parker kid?” Matt commented, his tongue poking out from between his thin lips as he played Xbox on my TV.

I nodded, pulling my hair into a high ponytail and hunting for the booklet to the local pizza place.

“Where are they going?”

“I don’t know.” I answered, “he hasn’t text me yet and told me.”

“I thought you didn’t want to go anyway.” He sighed, hurriedly stabbing at buttons on the controller.

“I didn’t. Alex kinda roped me into it. I felt so guilty. He made it sound like if I didn’t, him and Kayla would never date again and you know what I’m like when I’m guilt-tripped.” I bit my lip. “We don’t have to go. I can always text and tell them.”

“No! It might be cool. A proper date after this long.” Matt shrugged,

“you make it sound like we’re married, Matty. We’ve been going out a freaking year.” I laughed.

“Can’t remember ever going on a double date though.”

“that’s cause we’ve only been on like two since we met and neither of them were doubles. Can’t imagine they’re that exciting.” And I definitely had a weird feeling about this one. There was something about Alex Parker that really got to me.
