Chapter 9
I am running through the woods, chasing another wolf. I need to catch her. She senses that someone is behind her and runs faster. For some reason she morphs into her human form and keeps running, I change, and follow, catching her, I grab her around the waist, spin her around and press her up against a tree. My desire is overwhelming. I look into her green eyes, noticing the gold flecks, then I kiss her, forcing my tongue into her mouth…and I jolt awake.
I sit up, sweaty, and frustrated. Why is this girl in my head? I should not even be contemplating a relationship with her. I decide to take a shower and go out. I think a walk would do me some good. I throw on some jeans, a black t-shirt and sneakers. Grabbing a bottle of water and my jacket I head out into the night. For some reason my path leads me to an old girl friends place, Tabitha Williams. We dated a few times, and then decided the only thing either of us really wanted was the physical side of the relationship, so we meet every now and then. Sometimes she initiates, and sometimes I do. Tonight it is my turn. I knock on her door, and a few minutes later she answers, looking like she is ready for bed. She invites me in.
“So, to what do I owe the pleasure?” she asks. “I thought you were too busy to get together.”
“I am, I just couldn’t sleep and for some reason I ended up here.” I say. She really doesn’t care why I am here, just that I am. The conversation is just a formality. She moves over to me and kisses me, grabbing me by the hand and leading me to the bedroom. We undress and make love. I am not feeling the release that I thought I would, in fact, I am feeling somewhat guilty. I am not sure why. I do not answer to anyone. We make love several more times, until we are both too tired to go on, and I fall asleep.
The next morning I take her for coffee. I notice Ivy and Kyle in the back corner, Kyle has his arm around her and for some reason that annoys me. You should not have brought Tabitha here, Vash. Kyle shoots my way. Who the hell is he to tell me who to bring for coffee? I look at Ivy and the glance she gives me is ice cold. What is the matter with her? I block them out, I am not really in the mood for conversation, and the lustful thoughts that Zeke keeps leaking, even though he isn’t trying to, is driving me crazy. I thing Aiden is his true mate, I wonder if he has realized that yet. The thought brings a little smile to my lips. I get our coffees and we leave the shop, Tabitha hanging off my arm. I manage to get away from her with the excuse that I have work to do.
Going back to my office, I start preparing the essay/exam for the Northern Renaissance class when I feel Kyle’s contact. I open up, realizing where they are. Kyle is letting me listen in to the conversation between Vlad and Ivy and it brings a smile to my face. She really does have spunk. I don’t think anyone ever talks to him the way she does.
I am standing looking out the window when I see Ivy
and Kyle walking to the building. She leans into him and he puts his arm around her. I don’t know why, but it makes me furious. I go to the lobby to meet them. I grab Kyle and throw him across the lobby. Vash, calm down, she doesn’t need to see this. I ignore him and remind him what his role is. I push him up against the wall. I am not going to fight you, especially in front of her. He says. I realize he is right, but I am too angry to stop. Then she slaps me.
“It is nice to know someone wants to get in my pants. At least he cares about me.” She say, then walks away. I look at Kyle.
“You are getting too close; this is over between the two of you. Patrol around her house in wolf form. No contact in human form. Do not let her see you.”
“Is this for her benefit or yours?” he snarls. I completely snap and punch him in the face. Blood starts to pour from his nose.
“You know, you should tell her how you feel.” He says while holding his wadded up shirt to his face. She needs to know you love her. I only want her to be happy and the only man she wants is you. She dreams of you. She knows you slept with Tabitha, next time just stab her in the chest, it would hurt her less. With that he walks out.
Sometimes I am so stupid.
I went back into my office and sat down, leaning back in my chair, I closed my eyes. I went over everything that has happened over the last few days and realized how much of an ass I had been. Ivy has been thrown into a world she never new existed, and gone through physical changes that most people thought were make-believe and I have ignored her. While I sat, Zeke stopped in.
“Shouldn’t you be with Aiden?” I asked, sounding as tired as I felt.
“She went shopping with Ivy for that formal next weekend. I thought I should stop in to speak with you.” He said, sounding concerned. “You were really hard on Kyle.”
“No matter what he says, he wants her and I am not strong enough to watch him doing what I can’t.”
“Can’t or won’t?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Why are you here, Zeke?” I groaned.
“I happen to know Ivy does not have a date for the formal, and I would suggest strongly that you show up.” He stated.
“Judging by the events of the last half hour, I do not think she wants to see me right now.”
“So you are too much of a coward to go.” He challenged. I glared at him, realizing that he was right.
“God I hate it when you do that. Fine, I will go. Just keep it to yourself. What am I supposed to wear? I don’t DO these kinds of things.”
“Not to worry, I will take care of it, just be at my place by five on Saturday.”
I really feel like punching someone Pete, so please, try and stop me. I have not had sex with your brother, and if I chose to it would be none of your business, or anyone else’s. I am assuming everyone can hear this as I do not shield my thoughts well, if any of you have any other questions, have the balls to ask me, face to face! Ivy yelled into Pete’s mind, and by proxy, to all of us.
Zeke looked at me, “See what you started.” With that he left.
Pete, leave her alone. I put her through enough today, let her go home. I sent. Fine. He said. I could tell this was far from over. I decided to go home, as I had enough for today. I need a beer.
The next day came sooner than I would have liked. I dreaded facing Ivy after the way I acted yesterday. Going into class, I tried to catch her eye but she avoided me and, for a girl that couldn’t shield she was blocking me out really well. She finally put her hand up for a new blue book and I did not respond until she looked at me. She asked me for another book and smiled, but it was empty, and it was my fault. She finished, and handed her book in, running out of class. I wanted to go after her, but couldn’t. There were too many students.
I really need to fix this. I thought.
Yes you do, for her sake. Kyle replied. I can’t stand seeing her this unhappy. I have had to watch from a distance, and its killing me, Vash. Please make it right.
Ok. I will do everything I can.
I tried to make contact with Ivy, but she had completely shut me out. I watch her in class, as she pretends I am not there, just another one of her professors. The other students are actually starting to talk, they have noticed. I don’t know what I will do if she rejects me on Saturday. So, I hatch a plan, not a very clever plan, but a plan none the less.
