Chapter 17

The forest is dark, human looking shapes flitting through the trees. The wolves never stood a chance. With inhuman speed the dark figures attack, there are so many of them. One stands out. I can’t seem to withdraw from this grisly scene. Vampires. So many vampires. They struck with a viciousness that belied their once human existence. The strangest part was the laughter. They laughed, enjoying the slaughter. I watch as one female disembowels a wolf, and giggles as his life ebbs away, as if she just heard an amusing anecdote. Is this what they are? How can anyone be so cold? I notice a man being supported by two vampires, I can only see his back, but I know him. Vladimir. Another vampire glides up to him, looking annoyed. He strikes out, slashing at Vlad, then punches him, snapping his head back. I try to contact him but all I get is a feeling of sadness and the picture of a pretty chestnut haired girl with bright blue eyes. The vampires drag him off, and then the vampire that hit Vlad turns to me. He is beautiful, almost angelic, an angular almost feminine face with deep red lips and pale skin. His dark hair is short and messy, but his eyes are what dominate his face. They look black and they are the single scariest set of eyes I have ever seen. He cocks his head and smiles, looking straight at me. How interesting. I see you have developed some of your abilities. They will not save you. I will have you soon, Ivy. With that he turned and walked away and my contact broke.

I started awake, sweaty and breathing heavy. This is the first night that we have slept in a bed in the last two and a half weeks and I was hoping for undisturbed, but no such luck. We followed Vladimir’s scent into the city, and rented a place, for a few days, until we could get some answers and because I am so close to my cycle.

“What’s the matter?” Vash asked.

I looked at him. “Darius has Vladimir and now he’s coming for me. I watched his forces overwhelm Vladimir’s, it was cold blooded and violent. The only one he didn’t kill was your brother.” I sighed running my fingers through my hair. “We need to find out where he went.” Vash gathered me in his arms, my arm over his chest and my body snuggled along the length of his. His warmth making me feel better. He kissed the top of my head. I fell asleep that way, with no more dreams that night, thankfully.

The next morning we went looking for information. We walked through the neighborhood that Vladimir’s scent led us to. That is when I saw her, the girl with the chestnut hair. She was in an SUV, looking out the window, a sad look on her face.

“Follow that SUV!” I yelled taking off after it. Vash sprinted after me, with Kyle and Pete taking up the rear. Ryan was in town asking questions. The SUV turned into the drive at the end of the block, pulling up to a ranch style house set back from the others. A man got out of the drivers seat and came around and helped the girl down, grabbing the grocery bags out of the back of the vehicle. They went into the house, but not before the man took a glance around.

“I recognize him. He is Vladimir’s beta.  I need to talk to him.” I started moving but Vash grabbed my arm.

“You don’t know what you are walking into.” He said.

“I actually think I do. Now, let me go.” And I walked up to the front door and knocked.

The door opened and I stood face to face with Jon. I hadn’t seen him since the abduction and I was a little nervous.

“I need to talk to you.” I said. “Do you mind if we come in? It’s Vash, Kyle, Pete and I.” I waited. He grunted and stepped away from the door, leaving room for us to come in. I waved to the guys and they followed me in.
