Chapter 16
I hold Ivy while she sleeps, my arms around her protectively, stroking her hair. I still can’t understand why she risked so much to save me. I know someone said she should, probably a vampire, but why did she? I have never done anything but try and kill her, and beat her senseless, not to mention force myself on her. I feel a great sense of debt towards her, one that I don’t think I will ever get a chance to repay. I will; however, do anything I can to protect her, and I know Darius wants her. That can’t be good. I need more information. If I live through the confrontation I know is coming, I will have to gather the intel and pass it to Vash, if he will take it. It has me worried. My time for reflection is cut short, as Vash and his pack show up.
“Can you stand, girly?” I quietly asked her, keeping my voice level. The raw fury on Vash’s face showing how close to changing and attacking he is. I help her stand, and I stand behind her.
“Ivy, please come over here.” Vash growled dangerously.
“Not if you intend to gang up on, and kill your brother.” She whispered “He saved my life. Please let him go.” She started walking toward him, then stopped midway. He is so angry now that he is shaking.
“You have been gone for ten days, taken by force, and obviously treated badly, Kyle was beaten so badly he was in a coma for two days, and Vlad is responsible for multiple murders, including your parents and you want me to let him walk away?” he asked, quietly. She nodded at him, looking terrified. He raised his hand as if to strike her and I couldn’t stop myself, I launched myself at them, changing halfway, pushing Ivy behind me. I snarled at him. I have already hurt her enough, he is not going to hit her.
“I see. Well, she wants to let you go, so go.” Vash said cooly, and turned, walking the direction he had come.
She put her hand on my fur covered arm, and gave me a look that said thank you, then followed my brother out of the woods.
Thank you girly, for thinking I was worth rescuing. I sent to her.
Thank you for returning the favor. I hope to see you again. She replied, sincerity in her mental voice. She actually hoped to see me again.
I changed back, backed up to the tree I had been sitting against earlier, and slid down to sit, leaning my head back, closing my eyes and balancing my arms on my knees. Jon and Eli arrived quietly, appearing in the clearing.
“Vladimir?” Jon asked quietly.
I opened my eyes, meeting his gaze. “I release you from your obligations to me as Alpha.” I stated, my voice sounding tired. “I am not the same man you signed on to follow. I do not work for Darius anymore. In fact, I have changed sides, and I will do everything to stop that massive prick in any way I can.”
Jon just smiled. “It’s about time, sir. If you don’t mind, I think we will keep the arrangement just as it is. You are our Alpha. I am your Beta. I am glad the circumstances have changed, Darius is a cold, self serving ass hole.” He paused then asked.”What about the girl?”
“She saved me.” I said softly. “even though I treated her so badly, she still thought I was worth saving.” A tear escaped my eye, I quickly wiped it away. “She is off limits, I will kill anyone who hurts her. I have to find out what Darius wants from her, so we have to head north, to the city.”
We morphed into our full wolf forms, and started running. We ran for several days, making our way north, through wild country, hunting and camping as wolves. It was actually more comfortable, as we were much more suited to the cold weather that way. On the day we reached the outskirts of the city, I smelled something that actually made me want to follow it.
