Chapter 1
The confrontation did not last long. The Vampires came out of the woods, quietly gliding across the lawn of the stately school, taking the group by surprise. The boys put up a fight, but in the end, were unable to stop him, Darius, from accomplishing his task. Darius had the girl by the head, hands on either side of her pretty face, black and brown swirling eyes locked on her deep, sky blue ones. In a last ditch effort, Trevor and Nicholas rushed the pair, interrupting their macabre dance. The girl fell to the ground, unconscious as the boys were launched across the lawn, giving one mental shriek, Vladimir…Darius! Before everything fades to black. Snorting in disgust, he thinks, sending pups to do a wolves job, I wanted Vladimir to see this. Darius surveys the scene, taking in the rolling green lawns that gently nestle against regal halls devoted to the education of those that can afford it. He would have liked to do more damage to the girls mind, but those damned wolves screwed it up and now he was out of time, he would have to be satisfied with the results he was able to get. Vladimir is going to pay for disobeying him. This is no longer about his agenda, this is personal. No one gets away from him, especially not one of the sub species. He watched as people poured from the school, flocking toward the fallen youths. With a chuckle, he gave the girl one last look, and made his way back into the forest from the direction that he came.

Groaning, I rolled over, spitting dirt and grass out of my mouth. Looking around, I spy Chloe, in a heap about ten feet away. Crawling, I make my way over, my only focus her; making sure she is ok. Good, she’s breathing. I do a quick assessment, making sure she isn’t hurt, and making her more comfortable, then turning my attention to the others. By this time, students start to arrive, to see what the ruckus was about. Most of them don’t have any idea that vampires even exist, they are just fantasy. I am not sure how to even explain this. I reach Trevor, he is now sitting up, groaning and holding his rib cage; he is definitely a wild man, not hesitating when Chloe was being mind raped by Darius. Mack and Cody held their own as well, fighting off the others, taking quite a bit of abuse before going down; their fury delaying enough to thwart Darius somewhat. We need to get her to the infirmary. I don’t know what he did to her. I sent my concerns to the others. I stood, checking to see if I could stand, and scooped Chloe up. Nodding to the others, we made our way back to the school.
“What the hell happened?” Vladimir yelled through the cell phone.
“He jumped us on our way to our martial arts class.” I stated, keeping my voice calm. “He brought a dozen, or so, newbies with him. If they would have been older, we’d be dead.” There was silence for a moment, and then I heard him sigh.
“I can’t get away right now, I am going to talk to Vash and have Ivy come in. She can evaluate Chloe and see exactly what Darius did. Are you sure she is ok?” He asked, the worry evident in his voice.
“She isn’t awake yet. The Doctor that checked her out said she would have to wait until she woke to tell if there were a head injury. She thinks Chloe was hit and that is what caused the blackout.” I explained. “We told the campus police that a gang of thugs jumped us.”
“How are the others?”
“Trevor has broken ribs and multiple cuts and bruises. Cody has a broken nose, sprained ankle and they think his wrist is fractured. Mack is still in the infirmary, his leg is broken and his nose as well.” Vladimir waited until I finished, then spoke.
“As soon as I am finished here, I will be up. It will be a few days.” With that, he hung up.
“Who are you?” she said, looking me over, a guarded expression on her face. I now know what Darius did. He screwed with her memory. Prick. I will hurt him if I get the chance.
“I am Nick, one of your best friends; we have been going to St. Peters Academy for the past six months. You are just starting your senior year.” I patiently explained.
She looked nervous, glancing around. “Does my father know where I am?” she said softly.
“Your father is dead, Chloe. Someone who cares about you, found out about what he did to you, and beat him to death.” Ivy said as she pulled the curtain aside. “You do not have to worry about him anymore.”
Ivy had evaluated the damage that Darius had done, in the way only someone with vampire abilities could. She found that all memories going back to before Vladimir met her in the woods are gone.
“Why is Darius even doing this?” I ask Ivy, Chloe watching the exchange between us.
“I don’t know. I think he is angry because I freed…well you know. He doesn’t like to lose. Vampires as a species are reeeaaallly arrogant.” She said with a chuckle.
“So, this vampire, Darius, erased my memories, to get back at someone?” Chloe said, her voice starting to sound hysterical. “How can he DO that?”
“It is part of the Vampire abilities, manipulation of the mind; it makes finding prey, controlling it and feeding easier. Werewolves have their mind speak, and the fey have their telekinesis and glamour.” Ivy explained patiently. I couldn’t stand it anymore, I had to know.
“Chloe, don’t you remember us at all?” I asked her, trying not to sound hurt. I know it isn’t her fault. “Do you remember Trevor, Cody or Macaulay?”
“I’m sorry, no I don’t.” She murmured. “You are my friends?”
“Yes, and we still are, even if you don’t remember us. We protected you when we were jumped.” I told her. Her eyebrows drew together as if she remembered something, although fleeting.
“I believe you, I don’t know how, but I know you are telling the truth.” She sighed. “So the boy in the next room is one of you?”
“Yes, that is Mack. He has a broken leg and the Doctor won’t let him out until tomorrow.”
“Can you please, for the love of god, tell him to stop singing? He is awful and I think the nurse is going to strangle him.” She smiled, and relief flooded through me. I ruffled her hair and she hugged me.
“Thank you for protecting me.” I heard her say, muffled in the fabric of my shirt. The nurse came in and told us we could leave, just to take it easy for a few days, and we prepared to go.
“Chloe, you are going to go with me back to the dorms. I am now the house parent for your floor,” Ivy told her. As they walked back to the dorm, Trevor, Cody and I escorted them, making sure nothing else happened. We parted there, going to our respective rooms, to get ready for classes tomorrow. It is only Tuesday and it has already been a long week.
