Chapter 8

**Vladimir**

“So, he has been spotted in Europe?” I asked.

“Yes, there is rumor that he is planning something against the fae. He has been looking for their village, and hasn’t found it yet.” Ryan, Vash’s information guy said. I sighed and ran my hand through my hair.

“I have to check out the leads. I don’t want anyone else jeopardizing themselves, so, I need to go on my own.”

“No, you have to take at least a couple of guys with you. Don’t be stupid.” Vash said, bluntly.

“I didn’t know you cared,” I said back, with a hint of sarcasm. I am still a little freaked out about this whole, ‘I have a family’ thing.

“Yeah, well, I don’t care, I am just afraid of your mate. SHE will kill me if I let something happen to you.” He replied, shoving the sarcasm back to me.

“Fine, Jon, pick some guys. I want you to stay with Chloe. I don’t know how long I will be gone, but I don’t see more than a week to check out the leads. Oh, and have the jet ready by 6 am. I want an early start.” With that I rose and walked out. I wanted to spend as much time with my mate as possible. The thought of leaving her for even a week was making my chest hurt. I opened her door slowly, and saw her, eyes closed, sitting on the bed in a pair of boxers and a tank top, listening to her ipod and humming. God, she is beautiful, her honey colored hair in waves framing her pixie like face, a slight smile curving up her luscious lips. I want to burn this image of her into my mind. I don’t know how I am going to do this.

“Are you going to stand there all night and stare at me or are you going to join me?”  Her deep blue eyes are now open and focused on me. I chuckle, not needing a second invitation; I shut and lock the door, and close the distance between us. I don’t intend to get much sleep tonight, I guess I will just have to sleep on the plane.

We left before first light. It took all my self control to leave the warm haven of Chloe’s bed, her sleeping form a temptation. She was snuggled along my body and I had to untangle myself from her to get up. That was the point I had almost lost my resolve. My fear of Darius attacking her again to get back at me was the only thing that made me able to follow through.  Her losing her memory was bad, but the fact he was able to accomplish it so easily scared me half to death. I need to finish this, for her safety.

We reached our destination in record time. I haven’t been back here in decades. The intel we had suggested Darius was gathering rogue werewolves, going back to The Czek Republic. Whoever he is working for needs to take out the fae, if he wants to bring down the council, and the Vampire Consortium and create the state of anarchy that he desires, and to do that he needs troops that would relish a change in political structure. I was once on of those soldiers. I know what he needs and I know where he will start recruiting.  The town doesn’t really have a name, it doesn’t need one. If you want mercenaries, or to hire a thug to do your dirty work, this is where you come. I am hoping that my connections are still good enough to lead somewhere.

A few hours after sundown we slipped into the town, keeping to the shadows, heading for the Pirates Tankard, an inn of dubious repute. The trash filled streets were all but deserted. You do not come out after dark unless you have a purpose. If you want to know something, here is where you purchase the information. With enough money, you can buy anything here. What happened should not have come as a surprise. The inn is tucked down a dark alley, and I never made it to the door. They were waiting for us. The fight didn’t last long. I was tackled by two vampires, and held as I watched a dozen others tear my men to shreds, all but one. I locked eyes with him.

“Why?” I choked out.  As I watched  his familiar features changed.

“I really don’t care about you, you were just an ends to a means. You were leverage to get the aid of Darius and his followers. Your mate; however, is icing on the cake. Oh the plans I have for her. I was supposed to have her, I had made arrangements and everything, but you showed up and ruined everything. Her father had done a great job breaking her, and I was going to finish her, but you took her first. I will enjoy finishing what he started, your death will be the beginning.” With an evil smirk, he turned and left the alley, leaving me with a sneering Darius. I started to struggle, I have to get to her!

“I told you no one gets away from me. you are going to the Arena, but first, we can’t have your lovely mate tracking you down, or worse, you shifting before I want you to and getting away.” He strode up to me with a syringe in his hand, and with a wicked smirk, jabbed it into my arm. If started to feel dizzy, and then, to my horror, I could not hold onto my connection with Chloe. I screamed, and sank into dark oblivion, my last vision is of Chloe, sleeping in our bed, her halo of blond hair making her look like and angel, my angel.
