Chapter 4

The dream has changed. The beginning is the same, the frantic chase through the forest, the voice in my head, the big red wolf with the glaring, angry red eyes. There is a different end now. I feel the bite of the white wolf, I see his glowing silver eyes, I watch as he fights the big bad wolf, as I have come to know him. Here is where the dream used to end, on a note of terror, not knowing what happens. But not now. I remember.

As I watch, the wolves that surround me, protecting me, take up a more aggressive stance, growling coming from deep in their chests. I notice how big they all are, easily twice the size of the normal wolf. For some reason this does not strike ma as odd. The white wolf is easily the biggest of them. All at once as if at a mutually agreed upon time, both the white wolf and the red launch themselves at each other. The backup for the red wolf leave, fading into the forest as quietly as they had come while the red and white wolves roll, snarling, clawing and biting through the clearing. All of a sudden it is over, the red wolf fleeing into the forest after his pack.

I am not sure why, but I know the white wolf and the others can understand me. I notice a bite on his leg and I tell him to let me bind it, and he complies. When I finish I lay down, I am exhausted. He snuggles up to me, I think to help keep me warm. I thank him, then, in my tired mind I hear You’re welcome.

I snap awake, startled. I must have dozed off while reading in my car. After the mortifying experience in the café, I needed time to gather my thoughts, so I headed back to my car. I don’t have class until ten and I figured the breather would calm my stomach, which had not stopped flipping around. The term “butterflies” didn’t quite cover it. I am not used to this, nor do I have time for it. I am used to guys fawning over Aiden, with me as a brief distraction. Speak of the devil…at that moment Aiden runs up to the passenger door, and knocks. I unlock it and she climbs in.

“OMG! Guess what happened after you left! She breathed, her words coming out in an excited rush.”

“I don’t know, did aliens land?” I replied with a hint of sarcasm, already knowing what was coming next.

“No! one of the hot guys asked me out! She squealed.

“Oh, which one?” I asked feigning mild curiosity, but hoping is wasn’t the one with the white hair. Why am I even concerned?  The rolling in my stomach is getting more intense, almost cramp-like. I look at her, waiting for the bomb to drop.

“The big one with the brown hair.” She answers. “he is sooo dreamy! His name is Zeke Miller, and he is here as a grad student!”

My feeling of relief is almost tangible. Why am I reacting like this? I turn to Aiden, trying to shake this weird mood I seem to be in.

Glancing at my watch I look at Aiden. “I have to get to astronomy class, do you want to walk with me and tell me all about him?”

“Yes!” she all but yells back.

Getting out of the car, I grab my jacket and bookbag, making sure that I have everything I need. Aiden is nearly jumping out of her skin waiting for me.

“Hurry up!” she whines. “I want to tell you everything!”

“Please do NOT tell me everything, trying to forget some of the things you have shared about previous boyfriends has given me headaches!” I teased.

“He is really smart, and serious, not my usual, and he is really well built, definitely my usual, and…” she went on like this for the entire walk to the science building. Don’t get me wrong. I usually like to listen to her exploits, she is fun and will do things I just do not have the nerve to try. I am just really distracted, those grey eyes drifting into my thoughts, randomly.
