Hey guys :) I know, it's been awhile... Well, only 5 days so it's not that bad. I'm still away from home right now so my uploads may be a bit irregular and the time it takes for the next upload might take awhile... Stick with me tho, I'm coming home in like 2 and a half weeks and will upload more! Of course, when summer ends, the irregular uploads might return but until then.... Enjoy!
Cara
“She might be your mate?”
Jed sighed, running his fingers through his dark locks. “Look, it’s just that gut feeling, you know?”
“Honey, why didn’t you say so before?” my mom asked, looking so proud. “If that’s the case, your mate is welcome here anytime!”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “You better not be shitting me.”
He nodded. “I’m not.”
He looked a little suspicious but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Well, I guess I can’t push aside my sister-in-law.”
He nodded, looking relieved.
Well, I guess I’m not the only one that has the gut feeling about having a mate. But I must be way over in my head. There’s no way the sexy Duke would be my mate.
“Does she even want our help?” I asked.
He shrugged. “I haven’t told her about it, but I’m sure she’d want to escape as well.”
“Well, I guess I’ll have to be nicer to her.”
“That would be appreciated, little sis,” he said, grinning.
“Oh Car, have you found a mate yet?” my mom asked, looking at me expectantly.
“My baby girl has a mate?”
My dad appeared in the room, looking protective.
“Um, no,” I said, blushing.
“You do!” Jed accused.
“What? No I don’t,” I countered.
“You do! You have the same gut feeling as I do!”
I shook my head. “No,” I said a little to sharply.
“Car, who’s the poor guy? Does he know?”
I frowned. “There’s no one.”
My dad walked over and put his hands on my shoulders. “Princess, your mate is going to be one lucky fellow. Like how I got lucky when I got your mom.”
My mom giggled and went over at kissed my dad’s cheek lovingly. Gag.
“It’s obvious you don’t want to talk about it, but Cara, just know we’re all here to listen,” my mom said. I smiled at her.
“Listen, the guy better be deserving of your affections. If not and he screws you over, he’ll be meeting my fist,” Jed said, playing the overprotective brother card.
I nodded. “Sure thing, Jed. That is, if he doesn’t pound you to a pulp first.”
“Alright, I’m about to have to go to another meeting,” my dad announced. “You guys behave for your mom.”
*
The next morning came way faster than I’d like. I was enjoying my sleep very much and to be awaken by my brother’s annoying cries was not something I care for.
I yawned, sitting up and stretching like a cat.
“School in an hour,” Jed said as he exited my room. I yawned once more and went to do the morning necessities, brushing my teeth, changing, etc.
By the time I got downstairs, I had about 40 minutes to spare.
Jed just made his way over to the kitchen, his hair mussed up.
“Mom, no breakfast for me today,” he said, smoothing down his hair. “I’m heading to Leah’s.”
“Stalker alert!”
Jed glared at me and went to grab the keys.
“Hey bud, who’s supposed to give me a ride home?”
“Duke eagerly offered when I called last night.”
My heart skipped a beat, but I acted nonchalantly as I nodded.
“Well, I’m off,” he said, giving us a short back glance before nearly sprinting out.
“That boy is sure excited about that girl,” my mom said, practically glowing as she smiled. “Reminds me of how I felt when your father was my mate, couldn’t wait to see him.”
“That’s sweet,” I said, smiling. I hoped that I would have that same feeling with my mate but with my inkling of Duke being my mate, it just might not be the fairytale I’m hoping for.
“Your father and I were going at it like rabbits,” she said, reminiscing. I’m quite surprised we didn’t have you guys until after we married.”
I looked at her, horrified that she would share that piece of information with me.
“Mom,” I groaned.
She grinned. “You try having a mate, Cara. Once you mate once, it gets addicting.”
Suddenly, I had a mental image of me and Duke going at it like rabbits. I shuddered. Although a nice sight, it’s not something too likely.
“Um, right,” I said, suddenly not hungry. I pushed away my bowl of my Trix cereal with soymilk.
“Cara, it’s a werewolf mother’s wish to have her kids mated with the ones they love,” she said, hugging me.
“Isn’t it a given that you love your mate?” I asked.
She looked at me sadly. “In a perfect world, yes. But there have been cases in the past where the mates are so different that one eventually rejects the other.”
My future suddenly flashed before me. Duke would reject me and then I would have to live a life of a hermit. Who would I truly feel connected to if not my mate?
“Don’t you worry, honey. You’re perfect and I’m more than sure that your mate would accept you,” my mom said, kissing me on the forehead.
A car horn sounded.
Speak of the mate.
What do you think?
