Poem #53// Choice

It's not the music that saved you.
It's not the members that held you.
It's not the melody that cured you.
And it's not the lyrics that stopped you.

The members don't know who they are,
But they've heard your story too.
Someone, somewhere always spreads its similar.
They always and usually do.

The music is an escape.
And the songs silently listen.
For it's when you are alone at night
That your tears truly glisten.

They didn't stop you,
Because they didn't know.
They didn't save you,
Because they don't know you.

You make your own decisions in life.
There may be someone helping you through,
But there is always a choice.

You are your own savior.
You saved yourself.
You stopped yourself.

There is always a choice in life.
For if they were able to do it once,
You are too.

I feel like people often times blame music and bands for things that happen to them. For when they stop self-harming. For when they don't commit. But in all reality, it was themselves who stopped it. Your favorite band member wasn't there to stop you. Your favorite band member wasn't there to tell you to stop. They didn't do anything, but help you.

You make your own decisions. You make your own choices. They didn't make the choices for you. Sure, they may have helped guide you to a decision, but you did it yourself. You made the final choice whether to commit or not. Whether to stop or not. Whether to keep living or not.

It just it bothers me when I hear stories of people saying that when they meet their idols, they tell them that they saved their lives, or they stopped them from self harm. You did that yourself. You made the individually choice that was for your benefit. Obviously, this is simply an opinion, but I want people to know they have the ability to control themselves.

You are stronger than you make yourself. You have more control than you know. You saved yourself. You picked yourself off the ground. You are beautiful. You are strong. Remember that, please.
