As today is cool with the coming of autumn, I decide to wear jeans, short boots, and a long sleeve henley. I also grab a baseball cap and a hair tie. Who knows what's planned for the day.
Toby arrives at noon on the dot. He smiles at me when I open the door as I invite him in. He's dressed casually in jeans and boots, and he's wearing a gray t-shirt and a leather jacket that looks like it's seen better days. Still, with his mussed hair and his boyish grin, he's damn hot.
"Would you like tea or something?" I offer. "Not just now, Sweetheart. We need to get going. By the way, do you have a leather jacket or something?"
I grab one from the coat closet in the entryway. "No, don't bother with your purse," he says when I pick it up to leave. "Just put your keys and drivers license in your pocket and give me anything else like your cell phone, and I'll carry it for you."
I think this is an odd request, but I do as Toby asks. My joke about him being a serial killer crosses my mind. When we leave my townhouse, I see the reason he said no purse: he rides a motorcycle.
"Have you ever ridden on the back?" Toby asks, gesturing to the motorcycle seat.
"Not since I was a kid," I say, eyeing his bike warily. It's a BMW, and a very nice one at that. Still, I'm unsure. Toby smiles and hands me the spare helmet. "All you have to do is wrap your arms around me and hold on tight," he says with a wink.
Toby straddles the bike and holds out his hand to me. Well, Kenni, we all have to die sometime, I think. I put on the helmet, take his hand, step on the passenger peg and throw my leg over the seat. Toby waits for me to get situated, then he rubs my knee in reassurance. "If I do anything that makes you uncomfortable or you just need me to stop, squeeze my right shoulder. Otherwise, it's best if you keep your arms wrapped around my waist." I do a test waist-wrap, and I feel Toby relax into me a bit. The warmth of his back along with the reassurance of his strong muscles makes me feel safe.
"Where are we going?" I ask loudly.
"You'll see," Toby says over his shoulder as he puts the bike in gear and takes off from my house.
Tom's POV
"She what?" I ask, incredulous at what Ben just told me.
"She's going on a date with Tobias Menzies." Ben looks into his tea, unwilling to meet my stare. "Tom, I swear if I'd have known that this would happen, I would never have introduced them." Ben looks around the coffee house at which we've met to see if we've been noticed by anyone, whether fan or paparazzi.
I try to quell the rush of thoughts going through my head and emotions through my heart: Kenni kissing him, laughing at his jokes, making tea for him on a rainy morning while they stay in to watch the telly. Her tears as he proposes to her, what a beautiful bride she is, her smile as he holds their first child. Ugh! My imagination can be a real bitch sometimes.
"And what of you? I thought you were through with Angelique and were finally going to tell Kenni how you feel about her," Ben says in a huff. I love Ben like a brother, but he has a bad habit of turning things around so it's not his fault.
