\\Chapter Twenty\\

One month.

Two weeks.

Time cut in half, yet not equal. I stayed for one month in New York. It's been two weeks since I'd returned. Minutes adding up, and yet, nothing changes. As I gazed at the diminutive sand grains gliding professionally from its sizable container into the narrow path, then sinking into another compartment, something clicks. From top to bottom and then its inverse. The top turning into bottom with a quick turn. This sand clock resting in front of me translates my condition clearly.

He's on a vacation.

All this time I spent worrying and feeling insecure by this sudden concern disappeared once I learned that he was on a vacation. My father was enjoying himself on some foreign island and here I was counting the minutes for his return.

From top to bottom, our relation was summarized. Yet, there isn't this sudden turn that flipped everything around. Our relationship would never be like it used to be, once I was young and when my mom was alive. It would only keep sinking downwards as we drifted away from each other.

Once I had returned back from New York, the first thing I did was head to the company to see him. No, I didn't miss him. I was just worried. Then, Alice told me that he told her he was leaving and didn't specify where. I spent days trying to contact him, but no response was heard. There was this weird feeling that every time I ringed him, he would pick up his phone and, with hesitation, put it back down. However, everything I was concerned about disappeared as soon as Mr. Parks told me that he was on vacation and he doesn't want anyone to disturb him, so he took such measures.

I smiled bitterly that he didn't even take me into his consideration. I had thought something bad occurred. Having your father missing for a few days wasn't something normal, but when it came to mine, it's pretty normal.

I stopped playing with the sand clock as the doorbell rang. It's Sunday and nowadays Elena's visits decreased. She was the only person that visited me, but now she seemed kind of distant.

Her face popped up as soon as I opened the door. Dark sunglasses covered her eyes and a big hat was placed on her head. If I didn't know better, I'd say she's hiding from someone.

"Hey girl!" She stepped forward engulfing me in a huge hug, then she skipped to the living room already owning the place.

"Somebody finally remembered I exist?" There was no need to hide my disappointment with her.

"Ugh. I thought you'd say that." She threw herself on the couch, irritated.

"Come on, I only came back a few days ago. I was taking my time to rest a bit."

"Why? Lover boy causing you trouble already?" As much as I hated the fact that Elena was dating Alec, I couldn't help but make some fun out of it. We hadn't talked about it properly, only throwing words here and there.

"More like lover boy is kicked to the bush." She shrugged. Instantly, I knew that something was wrong.

"What happened?" I took a seat by her side knowing well that this was about to get messy.

"Not much. I dumped his sorry ass and nothing to add on that matter. Except, if you want to know how I did it." She huffed holding back her words as she grabbed the remote, trying to distract herself.

"Well, I don't know if I should be shocked that you two were into each other and that I didn't have a clue about it, or whether that you just broke up in such short notice."
