Deep breath.
The lights dimmed, and a spot light was facing at stage left. Jordan gave me my cue, I took the mic from Ryan, and walked out on stage.
"Hello everyone! My name is Ali James, and I'll be your MC for the Wishing For Snowflakes Talent Show!" I announced. And surprisingly, a roar of people applauded.
This part of the mall was packed. And that's when I felt the butterflies come flying in.
And that's when I caught Parker's smile. He was smiling right at me and giving me a thumbs up, and I swear, it's like the butterflies were calming down.
"Thank you all for coming out to the talent show! I'm so glad you could make it! I've been informed that we have a surprise act later in the show, so stay tuned!" I paused.
"And now for our first act, Tina the Ballerina!" I said as I read off the paper I had.
There was more applause and the spotlight followed me as I walked off the stage. I passed by a girl in a bright blue leotard and black hair in a bun. "Good luck." I smiled to her. She just gave a glare.
Some people are not nice.
Some random Taylor Swift song began to play and "Tina" danced on stage. And halfway through the act, the song changed to what seemed more hip hop. She made some moves, and she was now in a black tank and shorts. The act had changed from a ballet act, to a hip hop dance routine.
As soon as the song ended, the crowd cheered and she took a bow. She began to walk off stage and I walked on, the spotlight following me.
"Wow, that was a great way to start the show, wasn't it?" I said. "Thank you Tina, and now, for our next act. Mike...who's juggling on a unicycle...? Wow. Let's see this!" I said and ran off stage again, passing who I think is "Mike."
He rolled on stage and began juggling very quickly. It was impressive, to say the least. I could never do anything like that. At all.
He had probably ten things being juggled at this point, and kept adding more. The song in the background was some type of circus sounding song. Almost like he's a clown, in the most non offensive way.
His act soon ended and I walked back onstage. This was only the beginning of a long night of walking on and off stage, announcing every act.
A few more acts went on and I had to say they are pretty amazing. It included a gymnast, a speed painter, and a group doing improv acting. Such a wide range of people, but what do you expect, it's LA. But hey, I can't judge, these acts are amazing, nothing I could ever do.
There were only a few acts left, so it was the perfect time for the surprise act. As I walked on stage, I had a few ideas of what the surprise act was, and whatever it is, I was not ready for it.
"So next up we have our surprise act! Even I don't know what it is, but I don't see a few people at their stations so that may mean something. Here we go!" I annoyed and walked off stage.
We waited for a second, waiting for someone or something to happen. Nothing.
That was, until a tall man with a big forehead walked on stage in a green suit with red and white all over it. He also added pointy ears and shoes with the toe pointing up. Much like an elf, I'd say.
Parker knocked on the microphone stand a few times, then getting feedback. He put his mouth of very close to the microphone and spoke very strangely. "Hi-hi." And he backed up a bit. "I'm Jingles, one of Santa's elves. And you all are in for a real treat this year as Santa has decided that he would come visit your mall in this town! He even brought along a few elves for a little surprise. Who wants a backstory?" He said. And a few kids cheered as adults giggled at how strange this is.
"So I live in the North Pole, where all elves do, duh. But I'm one of the elves that is always off the floor of making toys because I am super clumsy thanks to my long legs. But I needed something to occupy my time, so I decided to start this group. We're called the Jingling Ring-A-Ling Bells, a dance group for elves that are off work. And we even got Santa to be in it, and we go around every so often to give performances. And that is why we are here today. So, without further a do, hit is Grasah!" Parker, or Jingles, ran to the back of the stage and began to bounce his hips to the beat of what sounded like a remix of Jingle Bells.
And before I knew it there were five others standing on stage with him, also dressed like him, and all bouncing their hips. Parker, Ryan, Jordan, Brayden, Mitch, and Mitchell.
But when the words actually started, one more emerged from the smoke. "Santa!!" A few kids shrieked. Oh, Liam.
What have these boys done?
They had a whole routine planned out and it seemed like they didn't miss a step. I wonder how long they've been planning this.
Of course, "Santa" was center stage and doing different moves than the rest, but he's Santa. He has to be number one.
Finally, the act ended and my cheeks got a break from laughing and smiling. They waved and I think Brayden pulled off doing a cartwheel to exit. I gave Parker a high five as I walked on stage with a mic in hand.
"Well, that was, something. Give it up for Jingling Ring-A-Ling Bells and Santa!" I said and a giant applause was given, again. "I hear from some little elves that Santa and two of his elves, Naughty and Nice, are back and taking pictures and hearing what little kids want! So if you want to see Santa, he's over back in his house!" I announced. "Now for the next act..." And the show continued.
There was a group of younger girls who did a dance act, and a guy who sang. Then there was a woman and a man who spoke poetry. It was really cool, and just saying that doesn't give them justice with how talented these people are.
The show went on for an hour and a half, and ended at around three pm. It wasn't a bad show, to be honest, and I was really excited for the ending as I get to announce the winner.
"I have the card from our lovely judges!" I said and looked over where Carly, another manager named Sam, and guest judge Dul, sat and they all waved. "Let's see who the winner is...." I said and got a round of applause.
I waited for it to be silent and once it did I put on a big smile. "And your winner is.... We Are Improv!" I said, and the group of guys and girls walked on stage. Honestly, I didn't care who won, everyone did so amazing. They got a huge round of applause and I handed them the card with the gift card inside. "Congrats." I smiled.
They all said a thank you and waved to the crowd as they walked off stage.
People started to swarm out like their life depended on it, it was funny. I watched from the stage, and got distracted once my phone buzzed.
Now that the shows over, how about you let a tall and dorky elf treat an amazing mc to dinner later
