My hand was stretched out to reach her, inching closer to her with every hurried step my legs took and right when I was just seconds away from touching her, someone shoved me from the side, making me stumble and fall. The fall pulled me out of my single minded obsession with getting to Citty and I heard it. There was a high pitched scream, loud enough to have me clamp my hands over my ears. I had no idea how I had missed this sound until then. But it was there, everywhere and it was loud, oppressive and scary. And I wasn't the only one feeling it. Every person in the room was screaming with the painful screech, their hands trying to protect their ears but failing miserably, just hurting.
People were already running for the doors and when the first person pushed them open, everyone followed, wanting to get out if nothing else. By the time I managed to get to my feet, I had already been involuntarily kicked and stomped on multiple times. It didn't hurt much, but I could feel the bruises coming. I chanced a look to the stage to see frantic officers trying to get a hold of the cage, which the man on the inside pushed against, fighting to get out or, if nothing else, move it to wherever he intended to go. The cage was rattling, sometimes dangerously tilting on one of its edges until the officers managed to pull it down again. The man was also the one making the screeching noise. It seemed strangely unrelated to the way he opened his mouth in a scream, my mind expecting it to be a deep agony filled scream. Instead it was higher than I had every heard anyone scream. It sounded like something of another world.
People kept pushing me from all sides, making me walk towards the doors as well and also lose sight of Citty. I couldn't see her, but I refused to leave without her. So I pushed back, walking back through the people running towards me, none of whom even spared me a glance as they ran past or into me.
As much as I fought against the crown, trying to block out the sight in front of me that still seemed, even with all the new information, unbelievably inhumane, I couldn't get a step further. Every time I pushed past someone, another person would push me back in their haste to leave.
I ended up flattening myself against the wall next to the doors, holding my hands over my ears and closing my eyes, willing my body to calm down and to ignore everything that was going on around me.
It was strange how I lost my senses so easily when that guy from uni touched my shoulder, but now, surrounded by so many people that violently touched and even pushed my body, I was alright. My heart was pounding and my knees were shaking, but that was to be expected, a normal reaction, no weird outbursts. I wasn't sure if that was anything to be proud of or something I should worry about.
The noise seemed to dim at some point, people's screams getting less and less and I was thankful for that. But with every diminishing scream, the man's screech was getting all the more prominent.
When it was the only thing I could hear, I dared open my eyes. There were only handful of people left in the room.
The first one I noticed sat huddled in the furthest corner of the room, hunched into herself, not covering her ears but hiding her eyes behind her arms.
I ran to her immediately, now finally able to get to her.
I immediately slid onto my knees and pulled her into me, wanting to help her with whatever had her crying.
She stiffened for second but then relaxed a bit when she'd looked into my face, recognising me.
Her hands gripped my shirt and she started crying into my chest.
"Make it stop!" She was whispering the sentence but I could hear, even with how distorted her voice sounded through her tears.
The screeching only got louder, seemingly more frantic.
