"We're almost home now." Matthew said suddenly.
I looked over at him, saw him with an undecided facial expression. Somewhere in there was a smile, but worry was just as evident.
"It'll be fine." I said, kissing his cheek and then leaning back into my seat, trying to relax if only for his sake.
Somehow, while we had been travelling, I had become the one to offer support instead of him. I had always thought that I was the one needing him more but lately, it had become very evident that he needed someone to hold on to as much as I did.
We left the car some distance away from the town in an attempt to get in without anyone spotting us and somehow, I was almost reluctant to leave it.
During our travelling, I had in many ways become attached to the small space. Parts of it were the close physical relationship that had developed between me and Matthew, where he now wasn't shy to touch me or sometimes even bite me anymore. It had become a very natural thing. But the other part was the fact that Matthew had been a constant. We had only had that small space and while sometimes it might have felt a little suffocating, it had always been a relief to have him so close. Soon, this wouldn't be the case anymore.
As soon as we stepped into the town, I could feel the tension. It was everywhere. People hadn't forgotten or adapted, everyone was still afraid. Matthew and I were both wearing hoods, aware that we couldn't just casually walk around, and were holding hands, this more for physical reassurance.
In a matter of minutes we realised that there was no way for us to get to the other side of town while his place was in full daylight and neither of us wanted to go back to the car. It was ridiculous really, how had we not thought of just driving around?
"I know where to go." I said and dragged him along the familiar streets. It was almost nostalgic, really.
In truth, there were quite a few places we could have hid out in, but this was me being selfish and Matthew didn't complain.
And that's how we ended up in front of Oliver's apartment ten minutes later.
There were people in the corridor and we were starting to attract attention. It wasn't surprising either. We were two grown men with our hoods up, ringing up a storm on Oliver's front door. I would be suspicious too.
Luckily, he did actually open the door at some point.
It took him maybe half a minute to even recognise us, but once he did, he quickly ushered us in and closed, then locked the door behind us.
"Hi," I greeted, "you look like hell."
He only rolled his eyes at my overly cheerful smile and then hugged me tight.
"I only just woke up." he then mumbled.
I raised an eyebrow.
"At three in the afternoon."
He looked away, then blushed. How unusual.
"I was... busy last night."
"Is that so....." I let the sentence dangle, waiting for him to meet my eyes again, but he never did. It was so weird. Usually he'd be prancing around bragging about his latest conquest and how good his sex life was. Something was definitely off.
Matthew clearing his throat brought me back to the current situation.
"Hi Oliver." he said from behind me. Just hearing his voice sent shivers down my spine. How my mind could be so far in the gutter in our current situation, I had no clue. Maybe it was the stress.
