30 Days with Genevieve
Chapter 15
I could not believe what I just heard. Genevieve told me one of her deepest, and incredible, secrets, and all I could do was stare at her in disbelief. Her dad was kind of weird, but he did not look like a killer. Of course, most of the killers look like normal people, but whatever. The point is, I could not believe what I heard. Was it really possible for Genevieve's dad to be responsible for one death?
"What?" I asked in almost a whisper. That was all I could manage to say after hearing such news.
"What you heard," she answered. "My dad is responsible for my mother's death."
"But...," I muttered. "How? What happened?"
"Well, it's a long story, Scofield," she said simply.
"I have time!" I exclaimed.
Genevieve sighed. "When my mom got pregnant, her parents got extremely disappointed. They wanted for her to have a future, and a baby would only be a distraction. They told my mom that if she wanted to get anything from them, she would have to either not have the baby, or give the baby up for adoption."
"But she didn't listen," I muttered.
"That's right," she said. "She was stubborn, and she knew that she wanted to keep her baby. My dad, on the other hand, thought that maybe giving me up for adoption would be better, but my mom, being the wonderful woman she was, refused to do it."
"Great choice," I muttered.
Genevieve ignored my comment and continued with the story. "After pondering about it, my parents finally agreed on having me, and my grandparents were extremely pissed. Both sides. My father's parents, and my mom's parents. They never loved me, and they still don't. They treat me terribly every time they see me, and the worst part is my dad won't do anything about it."
I gave her a sympathetic look, knowing she needed one. I don't know how hard it would be for me if my grandparents would have treated me like crap for my whole life. It would have been awful. I seriously could not understand why Genevieve's dad never did anything about it. I mean, our parents are supposed to protect us always.
"Anyhow, things were kind of complicated, but my mom and dad loved each other. Or at least that's what my dad said. But you know what? I don't believe him."
"Why not?" I asked her.
She lowered her face. "When I was born, things got even worse. My mom's labor was hard, and got complicated, and my dad was forced to choose between me or my mother's life. Apparently, it was way too risky for my mom to give birth without dying, so they could either get me out of her, or just let me die inside so that my mom could live. And you obviously know who he chose."
"D--does that mean.... he... he chose you over your mom?"
"Yes," she replied sadly. "How does that sound? He chose someone he did not even know over the love of his life. Do you think that's fair, Sean?" Tears streamed down her face, but she quickly wiped them away.
"I--I am sorry," I muttered.
"I know you are. Everybody is, including me. It's my fault! If it weren't for me, my mom would still be alive," she whispered between sobs.
"Genni... Don't say that! It's not your fault! I'm sure she would have liked it that way! She loved you so much!"
"I know she did," Genevieve replied dryly. "But she loved my father, too. And he betrayed her. He chose me over her, and he did not even know me! Isn't that freaking unbelievable!?!"
