30 Days with Genevieve

Chapter 26

I opened my eyes and noticed that I was in the same room as the day when I died. A white, empty room, full with nothing but my thoughts. I wondered if Peter was already there, and I wondered how everybody was reacting to my death.

I did not have much time to think about that, because Peter appeared out of the blue, and he had his golden wings again. His eyes were blue, and I couldn't help wondering if my eyes had changed their color, too.

"Hello," Peter said as he saw me. He walked towards me, and I got to my feet.

"Hey," I muttered. My voice was trembling, as though I wanted to cry, but couldn't.

"Do you realize why you are here?" he asked. His voice sounded cold, but I didn't blame him. He was an angel after all, he was used to seeing deaths every day.

"I suppose so," I said as I closed my eyes and allowed the tears to fall freely down my cheeks.

"Really?" he asked. I nodded. "Why are you here?"

"Because I'm dead," I muttered, "but I would give anything up to be with her for at least one more day."

"You know that's not possible," he said.

"Yeah, I know." I opened my eyes and saw how sad his eyes looked. Maybe he cared about me, after all.

"Do you want to see them? Just one last time?" he asked.

I stared at him, puzzled. "Who?"

"Your family and friends. Do you want to see what they are doing right now?" he asked.

I didn't hesitate to answer, I simply nodded, knowing nothing would make me happier. Peter sighed and took a control remote out of his pocket. He pressed a button on it, and a huge screen appeared right in front of me. It showed an image of Genni kneeling down and holding my body with her hands, crying. It was paused.

"Do you want to watch it?" he asked.

I nodded, and my heart skipped a beat as I thought about Genni crying because of me. It was not my fault to die, but I had promised that everything would be all right, and I hadn't kept that promise. I was starting to think that I never kept my promises.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

"Of course," I replied instantly, knowing I wanted to see what was going on on the earth, even if I knew I was never going back there.

Peter sighed and pressed the play button, making my heart race. The image of Genni started moving, turning into a video, and I could see her weeping and screaming.

"Sean! Please! Don't do this to me!" she exclaimed as she took my hand and placed it on her cheek. "I love you..." Her voice was barely above a whisper, and I could see desperation in her eyes, which hurt me.

"She is suffering," Peter muttered.

"You don't say," I said as I stared at him with anger. Peter just shrugged and motioned for me to keep watching.

"Anna! Anna, please come here!" Genni exclaimed as she let go of my hand.

Don't let go, I thought, even if I knew it wouldn't make any difference.

"Looks like she is calling for help," Peter muttered.

I ignored Peter's comment and kept staring at the screen. Genni gently placed my head on the ground and rushed to the inside of the house, where she saw my mom and the rest of the dinner's guests.
