Day 5

Beta

I poured some stew into two bowls before taking both to the living room where Mixen's large body made itself comfortable on the floor. I set down one of the bowls down in front of him, and I sat at the couch, sipping at the stew quietly, while the only sound to be heard was the lapping of his tongue. I just sat on the couch in human form even though I've finished, I felt too awkward to get up.

When he finished, he just pushed the bowl away slightly to rest his head again. I was jumpy, not knowing whether now would be a good time to get up or...

I continued staring at the bowl...

Just get up and get it.

Just stand up, walk towards the- NEVERMIND!

I thought as Mixen shifted a little in his sleep. I relaxed. Why is this so hard?

I covered my face. Why? Because I threw a fit that, after endless hours of thinking, seems more like a tantrum. My shoulders slumped as I remembered what he said.

He is right...Violet was happier after finding Lavender...

Was I...not enough...?

What a depressing thought...

I was shaken out of my thoughts when Mixen grumbled to himself while getting up, "A'right...we are to go s'mwhere. C'mon, Violet! Follow me.".

I was still sitting when he left the house, and was reminded of the bowl. I rushed to put it away along with mine, and follow after Mixen. I rushed to stay next to him in human form, not daring to ask where we are heading. We went through the more crowded areas of forest. It felt unfamiliar yet familiar at the same time. We've been walking for half an hour and I've debated several times in my head on whether I should stop him since our territory is completely unguarded. But I didn't. Did I fail as a Beta?

"'ere", he coughed out, though we were still among the trees. He was still walking so I knew it was just up ahead. Then a bright light blinded me, that's when I saw it.

Grass.

Everywhere.

I unconsciously shifted into my wolf and sprinted to the open, then I stopped. I looked around with alert. Something is familiar, but what is it? I ran, stopped, sniffed around, then ran again. The weather hid any scent that once lingered, so everything was fresh and new...yet still...

I don't know how long it's been, but I gave up, shifted, and returned to Mixen who had been watching me, comfortable on the grass.

"Okay, what is this place?"

"Well, ye were youn',", he paused, "I'm surprised ye remember youn'er memories yet not an older one..."

I gave him a confused look.

"This is where Violet used to go when she was troubled in the mind...You tried followin' her one time, but lost yer way and wouldn't hush. She heard ye, took ya to here, and that was the only time ye ever been here."

My eyes were wide. I looked to the open grass once again.

I didn't remember.

The place is familiar, however, I would've never connected it to Violet...

Mixen got up, "Stay here, I'll watch the camp."

I didn't argue for I knew how capable he was of defending himself and the territory. Bears can easily kill wolves with the weight in their paws and the power in their jaws. However, bears our kind have been...rare lately...

Mixen

I walked back to their camp. T'was empty and no scents except Violet's and mine. Went towards the only 'ouse 'ere, struggled with the door, then plopped back on the carpeted comfort. I shut my eyes. O, Violet. I questioned ye once: why must I care fer yer lover and follower? Now I know. I chuckled to myself, wolves really are as they say back home. Well, Violet...he's...I guess not just a wolf thing. He needs that place, like Violet and John. All these years, Lavender and I thought him thinking about the past would be too dangerous. But now I'm sure he needs this time of only thinking. He's been carrying such burden of negative emotions all these years, it's fer the best.

Sorry, Violet...I guess even at my age ye haven't seen it all...
