We all stood there gawking at Mr. Thompson. He was glaring at Maya. He was never good with anyone of colour. He was forced to deal with Dylan and the Ramos twins, but I don't think he looks like he's okay with having someone in his family of colour. This is why Alex was so worried.
"Honey, this is Maya, Alex's girlfriend. Isn't she lovely?" Mama T emphasized. I hope he got the clue.
Maya put on a smile and held out her hand towards him. "It's a pleasure to meet you sir."
Poor girl, she thought he was friendly like the rest of us.
Mr. Thompson did no effort to shake her hand. Instead, he grunted and walked inside. Maya's smile faltered as she drew her hand back to her side. I looked at Cole who had the same expression as mine, jaw dropped and angry as hell.
Alex immediately went up to her and cupped her cheeks. He started murmuring something to her which was our cue to leave.
I heard Zach mumble some swear word beside me earning a warning glare from Danny even though he looked like he was ready to hit someone.
We walked to the dining room so we can hear what was going on between the parents in the kitchen.
Cole, who was still holding my hand, tugged me towards the wall where we stood there to spy along with Zach. Angie shook her head and went to set up the high chair for Hailey.
"She is your son's girlfriend! You are supposed to support their decisions in life!" Mama T did that whisper yell thing.
"I want him to stop this phase at once. He's old enough now to settle down, so he should find a girlfriend who he can possibly wed," he said sternly. Cole's hand tightened around mine.
"Yes, and that's her," Mama T fought back. Yes!
"B-but she's, she's black!"
"Shhhh, keep it down. So what if she's black. Her skin is beautiful! The only thing that should matter is how she is as a person!" Yes! Yes! Yes! "You need to get out of that mentality and start judging people by their personality and not how they look."
Mr. Thompson groaned. "How I'm thinking is completely acceptable and I will not let my wife tell me how I should and shouldn't act."
He said the word wife as if it were a bad thing. Mr. Thompson needs to leave his anti-feminism and racism in the past and start living in the accepting future.
"Listen, Alex loves this family. I don't want a conflict between his father to drive him out. Please, just at least don't make us lose face in front of anyone. Act nice or even just normal with her, when Alex is gone you can talk to him but right now stop hurting that girl," she said with such power and emotion. I had so much respect for her at this moment and pitied her for having to deal with a man with this mindset.
"Fine, but this is only because I don't want to lose our son," he said. Ha, good luck with that.
Hearing that the conversation was over, we scrambled away from the door and pretended to act casual. It resulted in us in awkward positions looking uncomfortably at each other in silence.
"Hello Ashley," said Mr. Thompson as he came into view.
Ashley?
