Chapter 16: Cherished

Third Person

If one thing was concerning Levi Ackerman, it wasn't the amount of homework he had.

Calls with Eren weren't the same; his voice had been monotone, or his responses quick and short. Levi's birthday weekend was awkward, what was supposed to be a fun night consisted of small talk and long silences.

Levi was angry, sad, and confused. What was happening to them?

Dialing Eren, it went straight to his voicemail. He sighed with frustration.

"Leave a voicemail after the beep, and I'll get back to you asap." His voice said, a beep ringing two seconds later.

"Hey Eren, call me when you get this. We need to talk." He hung up, hoping that didn't sound like a voicemail breakup.

With his headed clouded by anger, he walked out of his dorm, not bothering to grab a jacket or key. He found himself lost in the middle of a park. Levi sat on the first bench he found empty, observing everyone.

A lady crossed the street, with many bags in either hand. A dad played tag with his son and daughter, and a couple nearby pushing their twins on red plastic swings.

Shivering, Levi realised something. All of these people have soulmates, who they have fought with, and been angry with, but still loved at the end of the day. Technically, it was Levi's fault for not telling Eren the truth. But would something so small matter in a few months?

With a clear mind, and fresh air in his lungs, Levi knew what to do.

Eren sat with Armin, his knees tucked into his chest. Armin was getting popcorn.

"Well, I really don't know much about Levi, but I do know that he seems loyal. He wouldn't hop from person to person. If he didn't mention it, he probably forgot because the kiss was so insignificant. And, didn't he say it was just on the corner of his mouth?"

"I don't know what to believe." Eren sighed, feeling defeated.

"If his "friend" kissed him, shouldn't we make it even?" He said, a mischievous glimmer in his eye.

"Uh Armin, I dunno..." He put the bowl down and sat on his knees.

"Oh c'mon, Erwin wouldn't mind. We could have a threesome." He winked and picked up the salt.

They both laughed, Eren more embarrassed than Armin.

"What should we watch?" Eren said, doing duck lips out of boredom.

"Mean Girls!"

"But I've seen it a thousand times!" Eren groaned.

Armin turned toward Eren, and put an arm around him. Why was he so flirty today?  Eren thought, although Armin's sudden embrace was comforting.

Eren grabbed a handful of the buttery popcorn, and threw a kernel at Armin. It bounced off his forehead onto the ground.

"Oh, it's on." Armin positioned himself on the opposite end of the couch, with the bowl of popcorn on his lap.

"Well that certainly isn't fair." Eren said, chuckling.

"Life isn't fair, get used to it." He threw handfuls at Eren, and without trying, caught a few in his mouth. In two minutes, the bowl was empty, the room was messy, and two boys were in tears from laughter.

With pain in his sides, Eren realised something. Levi was more than Eren's boyfriend, he was Eren's best friend. Without Levi in his life, a piece of the puzzle was missing. Even though Levi was stubborn, and was a pain in the ass, Eren wouldn't want him to leave forever. He'd die without him.

"Armin, I gotta go." Eren wiped a tear from his eye, and ruffled his hair. Popcorn kernels fell to the floor, and Eren stepped in one as he put his shoe on.

"Thanks for this, though." He said before he closed the front door. In the cold night, Eren ran all the way to his house.

"Eren!"

"Levi!" They exclaimed at the same time.

"I have something I'd like to say."

"If you're gonna apologise, don't. I already accept it." Eren said, wanting to get his words out.

"It's not that. I wa-."

"I think we should move in together. An apartment in the cities, me and you." Levi could hear Eren's smile, and he heard the excitement in his voice. "It's a brand new, clean start for us. Everything that happened in the past we could fo-."

"That sounds lovely, Eren. But there was something else I was thinking of, too." Eren's heart dropped, and his stomach suddenly had anxious butterflies, eager to get out.

"I.. I think I want to marry you." Eren dropped his phone in shock. Happy tears filled his eye, and an immense happiness filled him. Realising he left Levi hanging, he picked it back up.

"Eren, are you there?" Tears fell slowly, and Eren put a hand over his mouth.

"Yeah, I'm here." His voice cracked. Adrenaline and excitement filled him. He was also kind of sweaty, too.

"I-I think we should wait until I get out of school. W-we could start our life in the city, go to the same or nearby colleges. Levi, we can make this work. But would two-ish years be too long to wait?"

Quietly, Levi replied. "I'd wait for you for two thousands years, love." (a/n: haha doctor who reference)

"What's the next day you're free?"

"Tomorrow, actually."

"We should talk more in person. I'll meet you at your dorm around 1?"

"I'd love that, Eren." A minute after they hung up, both of their birthmarks glowed gold. Their hearts were swollen with love for each other, and they had an internal bond.

Eren Jaeger and Levi Ackerman were officially soulmates.
