D A I S Y

After three minutes of persuading Auburn to sneak out and meet me, she finally gave in.

I quickly grabbed my jacket, slipped on a pair of shoes and shoved my phone into my pocket. I breathed out as I slowly opened the door, revealing a - thankfully - empty hallway.

But I realized someone else was in the hall when I tripped over something.

I looked down in surprise to see Luke sitting on the floor on his phone, nervously chewing on his bottom lip.

"Daisy -" he said, almost sounding relieved. "Are you okay?"

I nodded.

"Wait . . . Where are you going?"

"I need to sneak out." I whispered, not wanting anyone else to hear me, incase one of the boys was nearby.

"To go where?"

"I need to talk to someone." I looked around nervously. "Please don't tell Ashton. I'll be back soon."

Luke bit his lip, probably contemplating his options to either tell on me or let me go. "Okay. But if Ashton finds out -"

"I know. Thanks."

I tiptoed downstairs and snuck through the living room (which none of the boys were in) and slipped out the door. I began the two minute walk, hugging my jacket closer to my body.

I was alone when I reached the park. I sat down on the swings with a heavy sigh.

Finally, I heard mulch crunching from behind me and turned to see Auburn. She slowly sat on the swing beside me.

It was silent for a moment, as I tried to think of what to say.

"If I ask you a question, will you give me a honest answer?" I finally asked.

She hesitated before saying she would.

"Why are you taking things so far?" I asked. "I mean, it's obviously more than me ignoring your problems. So, why are you acting like this?"

Auburn gently pushed herself off the ground and swung back and fourth, the creaking of the swing louder than anything else in the quiet area.

"It's just . . . I felt like I wasn't good enough for you, so I tried to make you feel like you aren't good enough so you knew how I felt."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, Macy and her friends were so pretty and popular and they could get any boy they wanted. I was the opposite of that. And I felt like you were abandoning me for them. I felt like I wasn't good enough."

Auburn was shuffling the mulch around with her foot.

"But you didn't act like that was how you felt,"

"Some people are good at hiding their feelings," Auburn snapped.

"So good that others can't see what they're going through," I retorted.
