So this is done on my cover for Silver Trickster, and it's pretty easy. Takes a lot of experimenting and playing around with, but very fun to do.
i. Open a plain white image as the background in superimpose. Then, add either your PNG or your photo you'd like to use (you'll have to mask around it first)
ii. Make the foreground image black and white under the filter tab (turn the saturation all the way down) and then merge.
iii. Open one of the forest images above or you can use another one of your choice as the foreground. Select different overlays on the transform tab (I believe I used screen) and move it around until you get what you like. Merge and repeat the process.
iv. When you're done, save the image. I used times new roman font above in Phonto.
