Chapter Twelve . . . Before We Say Good-Bye

Kylie's POV

It was only two days before Ray had to get on his flight and leave for his convention and I was worried on the inside, but at least I would be safe with Burnie while he was gone, and Ray was all for me staying with his boss until he gets back.

"I think you're going to have the best time possible with Burnie while I'm away." He smiled as we sat in a little ice cream shop.

"Yeah . . ." I trailed as I played with my spoon.

I have been like this lately, distant, because I was scared.

Scared what would happen while Ray was gone, scared what would happen at the convention, scared he would find some other girl who was not pregnant with an abusive husband.

"Hey, come on Ky, you can talk to me." He encouraged as he placed a hand on top of mine.

I looked up at Ray and sighed wanting to get everything out but I didn't want to unload my silly fears at him all at once.

"I'm just . . . nervous about you leaving." I sighed.

"I'm sorry baby." He rubbed my hand and sighed. "I don't have to go."

I shook my head. "No, no, I'm not going to be the girlfriend who holds you back from work and all your fans."

"Fuck work . . . fuck the fans." He chuckled. "Although they are important, you are important. Way more important."

I smiled at him sadly. "Ray what happens if you meet a girl out there who isn't a huge cow, and pregnant with an abusive husband's kid."

"That's what you're worried about?" He asked before letting out a little laugh. "Kylie, I could care less if you are pregnant. I want you and that baby to be mine." He let out a breath and suddenly got serious. "Look, I know this is a lot to ask you right now, but did you decide who's name you were going to put on the birth certificate . . ." He trailed.

"Well I was going to put mine and keep the father part blank. Why?" I asked hoping he wasn't going to ask what I thought he was going to.

"I would . . ." He stopped to let out a breath. "I would really like to adopt the baby."

I felt the baby kick like crazy making me jump in my seat.

"Looks like she doesn't hate the idea." Ray chuckled.

"I-uh-Ray that's a big step and we just started dating . . . and I-I don't know." I said truthfully as I placed a hand on my belly.

"I know it's a big step and I shouldn't of sprung it on you especially when I'm leaving." He said sadly. "But can you at least think about it."

"Yes." I looked up at him. "I just . . . I don't know if you're going to stick around." I admitted.

"I'm not going anywhere unless . . . you want me to leave."

"NO!" I said quickly and loudly making everyone look at us. "I don't want you to leave. I just . . . It's a big step for us after we just started dating." I said sadly. "I'm sorry Ray"

'No, baby, I didn't even want to ask you now." He smiled sadly. "I didn't mean to spring it on you. It just came out." He sighed and squeezed my hand gently. "Look, why don't we forget about this for right now because I have some surprises for you." He stood up.

"Oh you do?" I chuckled.

"Yep, except it's not here." He smiled and offered his hand.

"Oh no." I chuckled before taking his hand and standing up with him.

"Don't worry it's not scary or bad." He smiled and we started walking out of the shop and outside into the warm Austin sun.

"So where are we going?" I asked.

"Home." He smiled as we started to walk in the direction of our apartment.

"Home?" I chuckled. "Is my surprise that I get to take a nap?" I joked.

"Well maybe after my surprise." He winked.

"Now, I'm getting scared." I said with a smile.

"Don't be." He kissed my cheek.

It wasn't a long walk to the apartment, but when we got there I was out of breath due to my size.

"We're taking an Uber from now on." I said as I huffed out my breaths.

"Okay, sorry." He rubbed my back as he opened the door and we walked in. "Here sit down and I'll get you some water." He said and walked quickly to the kitchen.

I sat on the couch and took off my light weighted jacket and placed a hand on my aching lower back. I let out a breath and relaxed before Ray came back and giving me a glass of water.

"Thanks." I smiled and took a sip.

"So, I know I'm going to be gone for a while," He smiled and I then noticed that he had a hand behind his back. "So I want to give you something to remember me by." He said before pulling his hand out from behind his back and revealing a necklace that hung from his fingers.

"What is this?" I asked sitting up slightly, totally surprised.

"Well it's something so you don't forget me." He smiled.

I looked at the necklace and saw that it was a rose necklace, it kind of reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, with the rose caught in a glass case.

"You got me and expensive necklace so I wouldn't forget you?" I asked with a chuckle before kissing him. "I would never forget you. Even if I really wanted to."

He cupped my cheeks and deepened the kiss and I held onto him close before he pulled away abruptly.

"Let's put this on you." He said and moved his hand around the back of my neck and hooked the necklace. "A rose for my rose." He smiled.

"You're so sweet." I smiled.

"Oh stop it." He chuckled. "Just want to make you two super happy before I leave."

"Well we definitely are." I smiled and kissed him quickly. "I'm going to miss you." I admitted.

"Kylie, I'll be back before you know it and you'll have a great time with Burnie and Ashley." He kissed the top of my head.

"Yeah but they're not you." I said and he gave me a little smile.

"I know, but it'll be okay." He assured me. "I promise, and you can call me any time you want. I'll always answer." He promised and kissed my cheek. "I have to start packing."

"Okay. I can make something for us for super." I smiled up at hi and he gave a nod before getting up and going to the bedroom.

When he was gone I let a tear fall and held onto my necklace. I was going to miss Ray but I knew he had to go, and I wasn't going to stop him.

Besides what could go wrong while he was gone?
