In all my years on earth I have learned that people don't give stuff away. Humans are deeply selfish, we are conditioned to pick ourselves over others. Unless there is an aspect of interest. Then is when we take risks.

☼ Phoebe

"Phoebe?" He repeated, waving his palm in front of my eyes, snapping me out of my trance.

"Huh?" I tore my vision away from where his lips were and forced myself to look into his eyes, "What did you say?" I fake confusion.

"Nothing, forget it." I see a flash of disappointment cross his eyes, but don't acknowledge it out loud. "I was just wondering why you decided to let me pick you up."

"You offered." I remind him.

"Well, I know that. I just wasn't counting on you actually saying yes." He murmurs to me, I turn my head and watch him bite his lip in puzzlement. "I wasn't really counting on having to pick you up at a high school either." Josh admits softly.

I run my fingers through the front of my hair, "Me neither."

Josh runs his tongue over his lip nervously and looks at me, "So, what was that about?"

"What?" I question him as I run my hands though the rest of my hair.

He chuckled slightly bringing a dimple to adorn his cheek gently, "Why where you in the high school?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

He stays silent in confusion.

"Josh, I'm seventeen" I confirm with laughter in my voice, but he stays silent. His lips twitch at the edges as if he didn't know what to say. The expression on his face was unreadable. His fingers tapped along to the agitated beats that ran along his head providing the only noise that filled the vehicle. With his bottom lip held between his teeth, he nodded awkwardly and exhaled heavily.

"You look a little shocked." I smile weakly.

"I didn't really take you for someone who went to high school." He scratches the back of his head, "You look older than seventeen. Why didn't you say anything?! Are you trying to get me arrested?"

"Like you are so innocent,"My eyes widen a bit in curiosity and look over to him as he drives, "What were you doing before you picked me up?"

"Innocent? I wasn't doing anything!" A shy smile played on his lips as I brought up the question, "Well, I was, but I already took care of it, but I was going to get breakfast afterwards."

"Oh, okay." I looked at the road ahead.

"You could, um." He stutters awkwardly, "You could come with if you'd like."

"I kinda figured, Josh-"  I respond.

He wipes the bridge of his nose awkwardly, "Because, you know, that's- uh, that's what I meant."
