Fear is the body's excuse to shy away from what we subconsciously want.

☼ Phoebe

I was jolted awake by the thrashing of Tyler next to me, I peeked over the edge of my mattress to see the tanned boy now sweating, and a look of panic spread across his resting face. Knowing well what to do, I climb quietly down from my bed and lay down next to him, as soon as my fingertips make contact with his bare arm, he sits up abrubtly, his chest heaving and his hands shaking once again.

"Tyler it was just a dream." I say as soothing as possible in an attempt to calm the restless boy.

"P-phoebe-," he tries to choke out, his breathing sporadic.

I put my arm around his shaking frame and bring him into my embrace. He wraps his arms tightly around my waist while I rub his back reassuringly, "It's okay, I'm here."

After a few moments of deep breathing and choked up words Tyler is able to loosen his grip on me and eventually let go. I wasn't going to ask him about his bad dreams so it took me by surprise when he spoke, "I-I could hear noises a-and I was already having a terrible nightmare and I couldn't breathe-" he starts to explain, but is unable to continue when he runs out of air.

"Just try to go back to bed, you can go ahead and sleep on my mattress." I offer the agitated boy, "I can put on music if you'd like.

He nods and doesn't object when I slowly let him crawl into my bed as I look around my room for both my white ear buds and phone. I successfully find my phone and put on a soft Ed Sherran song. I search my room around for my pale ear buds, but I can't spot them anywhere.

"Just stay here and listen to the music, I'll go get my ear buds from the kitchen." I announce quietly as I cover him with my comforter and he shuts hugs eyes.

Carefully and quietly I make my way out of my room and into the bathroom. I turn on the light, briskly scan the room.

"Where are they?" I flick the lights off, close the door behind me, and walk softly towards the living room careful not to hurt my ankle. I pull and push the cushions off the seats that decorated my living room with no luck.

With a grunt I bring the fallen pillows back onto the couch, not really caring for the particular order my mother always insisted upon. I can feel a eerie breeze breathe softly into the house from behind me. Cautiously, I turn on my heels to find that the back door of my house was wide open.

I consider the idea of waking Tyler up and begging him to check what had intruded my house, but push it away from my mind when I remember that this is what might've terrified him.

I feel a shiver rippling through my spine as I stare fearfully at the opened door and approach it slowly. I turn my head over to counter to where the knife holder sat and took one of the larder blades in my hand. I force myself to step through the threshold although every nerve on my body insisted other wise.
