Opal's pov

"OPALLLL! MY GIRL!" I sighed and turned around to see my best frenemy Sugilite racing down the hallway screaming my name. I laughed.

Sugilite was tall and muscular. Her wild purple hair was always untameable. She had her pointed sunglasses perched atop her scrunched nose, and sported a smile on her impossibly sharp teeth. She was my best friend, even though she could get too... I'm not going to finish that.

"Surprised you haven't been expelled yet."

"Aw, C'mon! Yellow D only scares the fresh meat." She hissed at some terrified freshmen.

"Um, I think you mean freshmen. And both of us have sisters who are freshmen." I pointed out.

"Aw yeah, baby. Ames is almost too lucky to get in!" Sugilite laughed, filling the hallway with noise. "Is P nut back?" I rolled my eyes.

"If you mean Pearl, yes, she did get in." We stop at our lockers, redecorating for the new year.

"How's she doing?"

"She's doing... fine, I guess." I fitted a mirror on the door, fixing my hair. "Sometimes I wish I didn't have to look after her so much, though. It'd be nice if she had a good friend."

"I know how you feel, baby." Sugilite sighed, checking herself out in my mirror. "Amethyst is so neglected, dad really blames her for mom leaving."

"I can see where he's coming from. Your mom was young, and decided she didn't want the responsibility of kids."

"But he takes it out physically. Sugi ain't got no time for that." We walked into our first period class.

"Okay, seniors! You're the big shots now. Here to talk about senior privileges, school cheer captain, Rainbow Quartz!" Sugilite rolled her eyes.

Rainbow Quartz was Rose's older sister. While Rose loved and cared for everyone, Rainbow cared for everyone who loved her. She was always showing off her dancing skills especially to any of Rose's friends.

"Thanks, Mr. Topaz! Hey everyone! As you know, I am Rainbow Quartz! And now that  we're seniors, we get all sorts of privileges! "

"Ugh, save me the speech!" Sugilite whispered. I didn't particularly pay attention.

"Hey, Opal!" Rainbow yelled after me, running through the halls.

"Hmm? Oh, hey Rainbow!" She stopped to catch her breath, hanging onto my shoulder for support.

After a minute or two, she flipped back her long, beautiful pink-blonde hair that I was always so jealous of.

"Hey, Opal! I have an offer for you! " She smiled. I looked her up and down, questioningly.

"You have an offer for me?" I asked, scrunching up my long, thin nose.

"Yeah! I heard you do gymnastics?" I blushed. I had twenty-seven gold medals, to be exact.

"Well, yeah."

"Great!" She smiled, and I could've sworn that she had an extra pair of eyes that were mocking me, alongside her excited eyes.

"Anyhow, I'd like you to join the squad!" I couldn't believe my ears.

"Th-that's great!"

"Awesome!" She cheered. "Practice starts tomorrow, in the gym! See you then!" She waved and walked away.

While I stood there dumbfounded, I noticed someone down the hall, eyeing me upset.

"Sugilite! Did you see that?" I asked, Racing up to my friend.

"Yeah. Opal, you can't do this!" I stopped laughing.

"What?" I asked, horrified that she wouldn't be supportive. She put her hands on my shoulders.

"You can't hang out with them! I'll lose you!" She said, removing her glasses to wipe away a tear.

"Sugilite, you won't lose me!" I assured.

"Promise?"

"I promise."
