Chapter 3
"Hurry up you are going to be late Claire," my mom called up the stairs. It turns out I took longer at Lucas' than I had thought and now I was running out of time.
"Almost ready," I called as I towel dried my hair as best as I could and threw it into a bun. Dylan and Charlie hadn't left me any hot water but I was officially awake.
I threw on my clothes and ran down the stairs. At the front door my parents waited for me, with my lunch.
"Have a great first day honey," my mom said and kissed me on the cheek. She handed me my lunch in a paper bag since my old lunch box hadn't been found in any of the boxes yet.
"Love you sweet pea," my Dad said kissing the top of my head and wrapping me in a tight hug.
"Is Charlie coming?" I asked looking around them to see if he was there or had already left.
"Your father is driving him," my mom said and I nodded. Then I noticed what she said.
"Then why am I taking the bus?" I asked. Seriously I would have loved to have slept in!
"Charlie is a little nervous especially after what happened at the last school," my mom said as I nodded this time in understanding.
"You don't have an excuse though so you're taking the bus," my Dad said as they ushered me out the door. I had found the bus stop yesterday at the end of my street so that way I wouldn't get lost today.
At the bus stop I had expected to see Dylan, which I did. He has his licence but nobody actually trusts him with their car. Shocker there. However somehow I completely overlooked that Lucas would be there as well. I took a seat on the bench walking straight past them. They were talking and seemed to be getting along. I think that is strike 1 against this guy. Now if only I could find two more reasons to dislike this guy I would be happy. Do the rules of baseball apply to everyday life?
"No she's not into attaching herself to things," Dylan whispered obviously he didn't want me to hear him but he was a terrible whisperer. When we were younger we actually used to be fairly close. It was back before Charlie was old enough to hang out with us. I had told him my crush when I was 7 and he and I were whispering back and forth. At recess the boy came up to me and told me he thought I was cute too. It turns out that although kids couldn't hear what I was saying they could definitely hear Dylan.
Also I instantly knew he was talking about me. I mean who is he going to talk about when he doesn't know anyone here. The only thing I don't know is if it's a good or bad thing that they are talking about me. I figured I would just change the topic.
"Are there any other people who usually come to this stop?" I asked Lucas curiously.
"Nope it's just us three," he said smiling a bit awkwardly, I felt surrounded by awquard silence. I sat there on the bench looking up at the sky. I wish I could see the sun but the fat clouds kept getting in the way! This seemed like an omen screaming at me that my day was destined to be unpleasant. Okay maybe not screaming but in my head, but their voice sounded pretty stern. Goodness Claire! Are you really thinking about clouds on the first day or school?
"Claire is anybody up there?" Dylan teased as he waved his hand in front of my face.
"Yeah believe it or not there is more going on up here," I pointed at my head as I spoke. "Then there has ever been up there," I pointed to his head.
"How rude, and in front of our lovely new neighbour!" Dylan mocked hurt. He took a seat next to me and then pushed me off of the bench so that he could stretch out his legs! So I then landed on my but and squealed in shock not seeing that coming.
