"Okay, fellows!" Coach snapped. "We got a new player! I don't care what you guys think, but they're good! So deal with them!" He nodded to me and I stepped out. Whispering began. "This is Laina. Yeah, yeah! She's a girl! But she's good and we haven't won a tournament in ages!"

"But, Coach, she doesn't look like much!" One guy yelled. I rolled my eyes even though I was used to people underestimating me.

Coach smirked. "She'll show you much when it's time to practice! Samuel! You're goalie! Jake and Ramon, you're defending! Make a line, guys and girl!" Before I ran to the line, Coach grabbed my shoulder. "Show those animals what you've got."

I nodded and jogged into the line. "Think you can handle it?" A voice behind me asked. The guy behind me had dyed red hair with the palest skin I've ever seen. He had a puppy face and light brown eyes, he was good-looking. He was quite tall and he seemed nice, but I wasn't interested in him.

"Yeah," I answered evenly, not turning around to look.

"Jake, Ramon and Samuel are good, the best in the team."

"I can take them. I will." I wasn't even that good at soccer but if Coach was completely appalled by my minimal skills, that means these guys hadn't been showing him much. Which means even their best players weren't very good.

"Well, you're optimistic. I'm not sure you can take all three of them, but since you're so convinced you could, go ahead. I'm Gerard, by the way. Gerard Park."

"Nice meeting you." Only one person stood in front of me, soon he was gone. My turn.

"Good luck," Gerard said, patting my arm.

"Thanks," I replied. The ball rolled to my feet. The two players stood a few feet away from me, smirking. I narrowed my eyes. The whistle blew. I kicked the ball forward, dribbling it expertly. One player came at me. I kicked the ball in between his legs, jumped around him and continued running.

The other came with lightning fast speed. I pretended to go one way and immediately swerved to the other, it was such a sharp swerve that it made him fall. I ran to the goal.

I slammed my foot against the ball and into the goal. I turned to see the shocked faces. Then they all started cheering. I grinned as they each high fived me, this was going well.

Practice ended and I went into the quiet girl's locker room. I changed and closed my locker, slinging my bag over my shoulder and locking it. Then I walked out, about to head home.

"Hey!" Someone called. I turned. "Gerard, remember?" I nodded. "Nice going out there! Was it hard?"

"Not really," I said with a smile.

"Really? I think that you're going to hit the top of the team!"

"Thanks."

"No problem."

"Bye! See you on Friday!" I said, waving.

"Bye!" He replied, walking the other way.

I walked out the back doors of the school and up the stairs. I walked across the soccer field and onto the sidewalk.

I decided to go through the shortcut, which was cutting through some woods. There was a pathway that led through it. In front of the woods was a park and a courtyard for basketball players. There was a group of boys playing there. I saw Ronnie and Liam in it, but they were too in the game to notice me. I shrugged and kept walking.

I walked into the woods, watching the leaves fly down. The pathway was quite wide, it could fit a car. The sun was setting, but it was still bright. Today went well and I actually enjoyed it, maybe I could get that normal new life I longed for. For once, I felt content.
