I woke up to a searing pain in my arm. My blood was in a small puddle right next to me. It was dark with only a small window above me with light. Thick black, rusty bars stood in front of me, reminding me how I got here. I looked around and realized that in front of the bars there was a man working on something on a lab table. He was hunched over, looking into a microscope.
"You're awake!" He said without looking up from his work. His voice was cheerful, almost like he saw a prisoner in the cells everyday. "About time. How are you, Laina?"
I didn't answer. He straightened his back up and turned around to look at me. He had sharp blue eyes with a pair of rectangular glasses in front of them. His black hair blended into the darkness, making him almost look bald. He had a white lab jacket around him.
"Why am I here?" I said.
He ignored me. "I'm Hayden. The Executer's best scientist and expert chemist. I cure their wounded soldiers and make torturing toxics. And you, my dear, are here to be a test subject."
"I'd rather you just shoot me dead," I replied coldly. I tried not to wince at the pain in my arm.
"I see you got a wound there. And, I am proud to say that I designed it. It's laced with silver, which prevents your superhealing to proceed. It also gives off a nasty sting, doesn't it?"
"What are you going to test on me?"
"Right now, I'm making something I call Animal Acid. Not a great name, but when I finish I'll think of a better name. Anyway, it will kill your animal side, as if you never got the Bite. Like a cure, for some. But a poison for others. And, fortunately for you, I'm almost done! Just a few more days! And I'm going to experiment it on you first! What an honor, right?!"
I looked up at him. "You...you have a cure?"
"So, you call it a cure," he grinned. "I see you aren't fond of your Bite."
Then I remembered what Tessa had told me, that the cycle would be out of balance. That the world would be in total chaos, I couldn't let that happen. But if I'm the only one losing it, it wouldn't hurt- would it? One won't make a difference. I chided myself for thinking about it, if I lose my Bite, it would have a whole domino effect.
Soon, others will lose their Bite and the bridge would be gone. I would be the trigger and it would be my fault if the world falls into a dark void. I couldn't be selfish and put my needs before the world. It wasn't right. My father wouldn't have approved. Mr. Luke would haunt me forever.
Even if I did want to, it was extremely dangerous. I was the first test subject, the one with the highest chance to die.
"What's the matter, Laina? Cat got your tongue?" He asked, laughing at his own ironic humor. "Well, I guess it is shocking at first. But don't worry, it'll be injected in you in, maybe, two days."
I zoned out whatever he continued to say. I remember Liam and Ronnie telling me that their wolf habits included tracking people with their scent, I hoped that he would succeed in finding me.
...Liam
The man had just released me and hopped onto the truck before I could go after him. It seemed their only priority was Laina. They had no intention of killing us. Was their main target panthers? I wasn't sure of anything. All I knew was I needed to save Laina. I didn't know what they would do to her.Tess, Ronnie and I sneaked into Laina's room and began trying to find her scent. I knew it was weird smelling everything in here but we were desperate. I sniffed her pillow and I quickly called the others, thankful that for the strong scent.
"Got it!" I called. I threw the pillow down and sniffed the air, sensing her trail. I was about to jump out the window when the door opened. It was Laina's mom.
"Laina- why are you guys here?" She said, confused.
"We...uh..." Ronnie stuttered.
"Where's Laina? I thought she was at your house," Her mom said to Tessa. "Where is she?"
"She is at my house," Tessa lied. It was a good thing Laina's mom wasn't one of us because Tessa's pulse went pretty high.
"Then what are you doing in her room?"
"Her stomach's hurting and she needed something from her bathroom that she forgot to bring," Tessa said smoothly.
"Oh really?" She said quizzically.
"Yes, don't worry. She's safe with us," I assured. "She'll be back in the afternoon. I promise. We have plans for today."
She sighed and eyed all of us. "She better be. Get what she needs and hurry and give it to her." Then she left.
"Guys! Come on!" I said, waving my hand as I jumped out the window.
We got into my car and we drove away. Her trail led us across the woods and out the other side. We traveled for another hour and we reached a rectangular, black building. It looked old and looked like someone hadn't touched it in years, medium-sized. We hid behind a fallen log and some bushes.
"Is she in there?" Ronnie asked.
"Yeah, I'm sure. It's where in there," I answered, sniffing the air. "I don't think she's above ground. She must be in their basement or something. Check around for any windows."
We quickly scouted the area. Ronnie called after a while and we quickly ran to him. "Over here!" He hissed, pointing down.
We all carefully peeked through. It was a basement with only minimal lighting. A few feet away stood bars and in front of those bars stood a man, doing some kind of experiment. I looked down. There sat Laina watching the man with narrow eyes. The man was talking. I couldn't hear what he was saying, even with my superhearing. Then I saw a machine next to him, the same at my house that muffled my hearing.
We all backed away and quickly ran back to the bushes. "What do we do?" Tessa asked. "There's probably really strong security in there!"
"Maybe we should set a distraction!!" Ronnie suggested.
"Yeah, you could be the distraction," I agreed.
"Wha- why do I always need to distract?!"
"Because you make a lot of noise," Tessa answered. "Go!"
"What do I do?"
"Uh...." I said. I looked around and saw a security guard. "Go punch him. Tessa, why don't you stay here and if Ronnie needs help then go help him?"
"No problem. Just find her and go!"
I quickly crawled near the entrance door. I spied Ronnie punch the officer. The officer fell to the ground. He quickly talked into his radio and got back up in a fighting position. A bunch of guards came swarming out of the entrance door, leaving it wide open for me.
As they were too busy with Ronnie, I sneaked inside.
