I grabbed my bag and walked out the door.

"You know it's okay if you want to skip your first day of school," mom said.

"It's okay, mom," I said. "I'll be fine. The file said that they have a soccer team, I'm going to join."

"Alright, Laina," mom said. She went outside with me trailing behind her. I stepped in and we drove off the unfamiliar streets. "Remember what to say when someone asks where you dad is?"

"He left for California for work and is coming back in a few years. Don't worry mom, I said it more than a hundred times."

"Good."

We stopped in front of the school. There was a whole crowd in front of the doors, students just lounging around before the first bell. "Bye, mom!" I said, opening the door.

She grabbed my hand before I could get out. "Be happy, Laina, okay?"

I nodded. "I'll try, mom. I'll see you at home."

She nodded and drove away.

I turned to the school and began walking, surprisingly calm. I slipped my way through the crowds, trying not to bump into anyone as I mumbled a few "excuse me"'s. I managed to get halfway through when someone slammed into me so hard, I fell onto the ground.

I was completely humiliated and embarrassed, I quickly grabbed my folder while using my hair to cover my face. "Watch where you're going, you little- Hey, you okay? Sorry about that," said a male voice.

I just nodded, not looking up and showing my face. I quickly darted back through the crowds and into the school. I took a deep breath, calming my racing heart. I forced myself to forget about what happened and opened my folder where all the information was in. My locker was 247. I walked to it, unlocking it. I placed my books inside and closed it shut.

Then I heard yelling and shouts. A group of people were holding back two boys who were fighting, a huge crowd forming around them. I felt a few elbows hit my stomach and a number of people crushed my toes with their feet.

I hugged my books, protecting myself, as they all swarmed around. The group moved forward, but something caught my eye. One of the boy's eyes glowed a cold blue shade. I shook my head and looked again. But it was gone now, back to the brown eyes. Maybe it was just my eyes tricking me.

I looked at my schedule. I've got science first, Room 101. It shouldn't be far. If I look at the room numbers then I could find it. I quickly went to the class, hoping I wasn't late.

I found a seat in the very corner and in the back, sitting down and pulling my books out. Some students were already here, sitting and talking. The bell rang as more people came swarming in. A few minutes later the second bell rang, everyone was now seated with their books out. I pulled out my textbook and waited for the teacher to come.

A woman with curly brown hair and blue eyes walked in and put her stuff down. She smiled at everyone. "Good morning! Today, we have a new student!" I panicked, my stomach was suddenly filled with butterflies. I was never good with introductions. "It's Laina! Right there!" She pointed to me, causing everyone to turn and looked at me. Some waved and some smiled, others gave me an unemotional look.

I smiled at everyone. Everyone turned back around except for one boy sitting diagonally from me.

He had light brown hair which looked very soft, wide shoulders and long legs. His jaw was sharp and a few faint freckles danced along his cheekbones. His skin was bright and he looked gentle, the kind of guy that wouldn't kill a fly. But something told me that if you pissed this guy off, he wouldn't hesitate to break your nose. He was wearing ripped jeans and a hoodie with a skull on it. His warm brown eyes seemed to spark when he saw me. I smiled at him with a nod. He smiled back at me and turned around. I did likewise.
