(Kalifa)
"Oh my gosh, no!" I cried. Why can't one thing just go right. I'm always screwing things up.
"No, wait. I guess you guys didn't tell her?" Dr. Yee looked at my mom, Asandra and Sofia as they shook their heads.
"Tell me what?" I asked.
"We had to perform an emergency c-section when you were brought in. Your baby girl is very healthy and in perfect condition." He smiled.
"What?" Tears felt warm in my eyes. "Where is she?"
"In the nursery, I will send for her in a few. Give you some time to think of a name." He chuckled and left the room.
Wow.
My baby has been on this earth for three days without a name. I can't wait to see her beautiful face. I am proud to say that I'm officially a mother.
"Sorry Kalifa, we didn't want to scare you." Michele spoke.
"Knock, knock?" A nurse asked while pushing in the infant bed. "Hello mother, here's your beautiful baby girl." She put my daughter in my arms and I felt a sudden pull in my heart.
This is love at first sight.
She had the perfect caramel skin, a thick grade of black hair. She was perfect from head to toe. She is my perfect angel, my perfect child. She had my mothers grey eyes, and her dads nose and my lips. She was the perfect creation and it kills me that her father is not here to see her and love her like I do.
"You're so perfect. My little miracle." I kissed her fingers and forehead and she smiled.
"What are you going to name her?" Asandra asked.
"Heaven. Heaven Marie Harden." I smiled. "When is the last time that she ate?" I asked the nurse.
"It's about time for another feeding. I have her bottles and bibs stored in this compartment here."
"No, I want to breastfeed." I spoke while staring at my beautiful bundle of joy.
"Oh ok. We can try, I don't know how she's going to take since she's been on formula for three days now. It's all about being comfortable and patient. A lot of mothers use a pillow to prop. If she doesn't latch the first couple of times, its ok, just try again." She adjusted my bed and now I was sitting up.
I untied my gown exposing my breast and cradled Heaven in my arm. I eased her to my nipple and she easily latched on.
"Good job mama." I smiled. This moment felt complete.
"Ok so I will go and get her papers from the office so we can officially name this beauty." She laughed and left the room.
"Heaven is such a pretty name. She's so adorable." Sofia kissed her forehead. "Let me go call Kalvin and tell him you're awake."
"I wish Ve'Quell was here to see what we made." I started to cry again.
"I know baby, me too." Michele spoke.
"Have you started on any arrangements?" I asked.
"Arrangements for what?" She looked confused.
"His funeral."
"Oh... No baby. How about you finish feeding Heaven and get some rest and we can visit later." Michele left abruptly, leaving me confused.
"Give them time to open up baby. For now all you can do is enjoy this new life you have here in your arms." Asandra sat at the foot of the bed. "It's going to be ok."
"Better said than done. I don't understand why she hasn't started yet? The longer they wait the worst it will get." I sat Heaven up and lightly pat her back until she burped.
"I know baby. Why don't you get some rest? I'm going to go check on my family and we will be back shortly." She kissed my cheek and Heaven's hand and left the room. Shortly after, Heaven fell asleep on my chest and I drifted off as well.
