"Steve, just let me help!" I pleaded.
Steve was currently trying to push me out of the room all of the Avengers were in, crowded around a table with files and papers scattered all around.
His face softened and he let out a sigh. "I know you mean well, but this is what we're trained to do. There's nothing you can shoot at with your glowy hands in there. We need to focus on tracking Ultron down."
I crossed my arms over my chest and gave the soldier a pointed look. "Glowy hands?"
Steve ran a hand over his face. "Look, you know what I meant. And I hate to say it, Emelia, but right now you would be in the way more than anything. I'm sorry." Steve turned and walked back towards his team, leaving me in the deafeningly quiet hallway.
I huffed, watching the Avengers argue over files in their hands momentarily before making a decision. I tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear, straightened my shirt and held my head high as I walked into the room.
"Wait, I know that guy." Tony said. "From back in the day. He operates off the African coast. Black market arms."
I could feel the judgment coming from Steve as he looked at Tony. Apparently his disgust over the situation was enough to distract him from the fact I'd walked back in against his wishes. Or maybe he was just giving up on trying to keep me away.
"There are conventions, alright? You meet people. I never sold him anything." Tony continued.
I tuned him out and focused on the picture Bruce had brought up on his computer screen. This is how I could help. I wish I could say I was doing all of this for purely selfless reasons, but there was a very loud voice in my head telling me that if I found this guy, Steve might believe in me. This could convince him that I could be useful.
It was harder than finding people I knew. Even looking for Bucky was easier. I had an inkling of what he was like through Steve, but all I had of this guy was a picture. Still, my powers were getting stronger day by day, as I became more familiar with them. Just as Helen had told me my body was fusing with the stone I could feel my mind and the stone becoming one.
It took a moment but I felt him. I focused harder and harder, and felt my mind hone in on him.
"Where is this guy now?" Steve asked, as I brought myself back to the world in front of me.
I walked over to a map that was sitting on the table in front of all the Avengers. I put my finger on a coastal area of Africa. "Here." I said. "He's got a whole operation hiding out in an abandoned ship. Its him and sixty three other men."
Steve rolled his eyes. "You're just trying to prove me wrong now, aren't you."
I put my hands on my hips and looked at him. "Well, if you stop telling me what not to do and just listen to me, I wouldn't have to."
Natasha, who was standing next to me, held her hand out for a high five.
I obliged, hearing the slap of our hands echo through the room.
"Alright, alright. C'mon. Everybody in the quinjet in ten." Steve said with a smile on his face.
All of the Avengers began filing out of the room. I waited for Steve , and gave him a playful shove on the arm when he was by my side. "I'm going with you." I said.
Steve sighed, and the worried look on his face didn't go unnoticed. "After the little stunt you pulled teleporting into the lab earlier, I expect telling you otherwise would do nothing."
"See? You're learning." I chuckled.
"You're staying in the quinjet, though. You're not trained in combat, and I'm not going to risk you getting hurt." Steve said, his tone unmoving.
