3rd Chapter: "Mysterious racer"

Riley POV:

The girl drops the flags to the ground and the racers speed up.

It's official: the race has started.

Dust invades the air, making it impossible for us to see anything. I close my eyes and wave my hand in front of my face, in attempt to make it go away.

I could hear teenagers running away, running towards the lake, to get a better view of the race that started.

"What the...?"

I recognize Farkle's voice.

Intrigued and curious to why and what made him say that. I open my eyes. The dust has almost completely disappeared and it was clearer to see.

"What the..."

I repeat as I realize what I was looking at.

Or should I say who I was looking at.

I blink many times, thinking that I was imagining things, but I wasn't. No matter how much or how hard I blinked, he still was there.

The mysterious racer didn't move.

Farkle and I weren't the only ones who noticed it. The very few teenagers that stayed, instead of rushing to the lake, had their eyes glued on the racer. They were whispering to each other, wondering and asking themselves what were they witnessing.

"What the hell are you waiting for?!"

I scream and get his attention.

The racer slowly turns his head to my direction and I freeze. For some reason, I stopped breathing.

The biker takes a hand off of the handlebar and puts two fingers to the side of his helmet then throws them in the air, as if he was saying "see ya", before grabbing the handlebar once again, and turning his head.

He purrs the engine for a few seconds.

"Go!"

I yell, and at the same time, he speeds up, and chasses after the other racers.

I grab Farkle by the wrist, and drag him to the lake, really fast.

"Riley , you do know it's impossible for him to catch up with them right?"

Tells me my best friend as we get to the crowd of teenagers.

"He will"

I didn't know why I was feeling so confident and so sure about it.

"Riley. He basically started the race two minutes after them. Do you have any idea on how much distance the others have covered during that time?"

I don't bother to answer him. To be honest, no I didn't know. I had no idea. And I also had no idea why I was acting like this, all of the sudden, when I didn't even know the racer.

I simply look at Farkle, and he must've seen something in my eyes, for, he sights and shakes his head before looking ahead, and pays attention to the race.

The cheering gets louder.

The first racer comes into view, behind him, two other racers, chasing after him but there was quite a distance between them.

No sign of the fourth racer.

"See. I told you"

Says my best friend but I just ignore him.

.

Lucas POV:

A smile gets on my lips as I take a turn to the left without dropping my speed. Something not every racer could do, for it was a hard move to pull off, and it took years and years of preparation and training.

I look into my motorcycle's rear view mirror, and my smile grows at the view.

Jake and Charlie were far behind me. I was 90% sure of winning this race, but there was still 10% chances I'd loose.

Very slim chances. And she represented those 10%.

I was about to speed up, to make the distance that separated me from the others, even bigger, when I suddenly see something in the rear view.

Charlie's motorcycle was getting closer and closer to Jake's ride. Jake kept leaning to the right, trying to escape whatever Charlie was trying to do.

What the hell?!

I think as I see Charlie pushing Jake's motorcycle with his.

Is he crazy??

Jake was holding on, the best he could, but I knew it was only a matter of time before Charlie succeeds and makes Jake fall. For the next time Jake receives a push, he'll find himself in the freezing lake.

I was about to turn around and help my best friend when suddenly, I see a bright light between them.

My eyes widen in surprise and go back to fully focusing on the road. I spot the last turn I had to take to win this race and start panicking.

"Fuck! What should I do?"

I muter under my breath.

I take a quick glance in my rear view mirror.

Charlie and Jake were now separated, away from each other. She was right between them.

But that didn't last. Before I could even react and speed up, she already was right behind.

It's impossible! How?!

"You're not winning this"

I say to myself and I could've sworn I saw her smirk under her helmet. My eyes keep going from the rear view to the road, trying to focus on every little move she did but also on the course at the same time.

Turns out that I couldn't. The idiot that I am thought it was okay to look at the road for two seconds, but when I looked back in the rear view mirror, she disappeared.

"What the??"

There she was.

Right in front of me.

How?!!

Before I could react, she took the last turn to the left and made it to the finishing line before me.

No one was cheering.

Everything and everyone was silent. They were all surprised. They couldn't believe their eyes.

I take off my helmet and put it in between my legs.

Everyone's jaws were open. Their eyes kept going from me to the fourth racer.

Me, Lucas Friar, have just lost a race. No one ever witnessed this. Never have I ever lost a race. Actually, that's a lie. I did loose against this one person, but he was an another story. He left the racing world a year ago, and I don't think he'll ever come back to it.

I chase him from my thoughts and focus back on the fourth racer.

She did tell me she got better, but I never thought she could get this good in a year.

"Who are you?"

Someone asks in the crown.

Her hands leave the handlebar, to go rest on each side of her black helmet, and takes it off. The blonde girl shakes her head, making her hair move from right to left, just like in the movies.

I chuckle thinking how cliché this scene was.

Whispers filled the air, before some guy decided to yell and state the obvious:

"It's a girl!"

Oh well congratulation!

And that's how everyone started cheering and rushed to her, wanting to get a closer look of the new racer in town, the one person who won a race against Lucas Friar.
